During the summer of 1985, Michael Jordan played an iconic exhibition game that solidified  the Nike color series ‘Shattered Backboard.’ What most people don’t realize is that the orange colorway comes from an event taken place in Italy where Jordan and teammates were dressed in an orange and white uniform, quite different from his traditional palettes. This is where the ‘Starfish’ orange drew inspiration and how it made its way into footwear. During this game, Jordan went up to dunk the basketball, completely shattering the glass backboard. This powerful act made the game memorable and drew even more attention to Jordan’s athleticism. He went along to win against the Italian team by scoring a total of 30 points. But it wasn’t until 2015 when the historic play was recognized by Nike. Within that year, the footwear label produced a reiteration of the coveted Air Jordan 1 in the orange colorway dubbed, ‘Shattered Backboard.’ At first, popularity was quite slow and didn’t catch the attention of the public including sneaker connoisseurs.  But as soon as the model was taken off-market, the hype began to grow and is now one of the most sought after colorways. 

This January Nike is releasing a rendition of the Air Jordan 4 Retro SE in the ‘Starfish’ colorway, paying homage to the ‘Shattered Backboard’ series. The women’s silhouette comes complete with a mesh build combining the orange and smoke grey colors. Varying hues are placed within the rubber outsole, complementing the main color scheme while also showcasing the famed Nike Air bubble.  White fabric lining contrast the dark aesthetic and rubber detailing support the base, commonly found throughout the AJ4 model. Stitched along the tongue is Michael Jordan’s signature ‘Jumpman’ motif in the ‘Starfish’ color coinciding with the raw-edged designs along the shoe’s upper. The sneaker is comfortable during times of wear as Nike’s Air cushioning is provided throughout - a true statement piece for any outfit.
