Kanghyuk, the latest brand on our Feature roster, is a Korea-based brand founded in 2017 by Kanghyuk Choi and Sanglak Shon. The brand initially started as Choi’s Master’s Program graduation project at the Royal College of Art, located in London. Upon graduation, Sanglak Shon joined the label and officially began the Kanghyuk brand on their Season 3 launch. Although only launched for a short time, Kanghyuk has already been turning heads in the high-fashion and streetwear industry.
The brand enjoys using different unorthodox materials, including vehicle airbags and transforms them into everyday modern garments. Described as a utilitarian menswear label, Kanghyuk is inspired by the early twentieth century and provides classic ready to wear silhouettes while still pushing the boundaries with the use of different techniques.
Kanghyuk is known for its signature use of airbags. The concept behind the use of airbags came about when Choi witnesses a car accident and airbags imploded; he then decided to implement airbags into his designs. The characteristics of the airbags attracted Choi from the barcode, logo, holes and stitching. The repetition aesthetic attracted Choi and shortly became a staple in his collections.
Kanghyuk’s Fall Winter 2020 collection “Collection 8,” explores the idea of balance between material and silhouette. The label uses a variety of different techniques giving the collection a unique aesthetic, including different distressing techniques, stitching patterns, textiles and washes. The use of their signature airbag technique can also be found throughout the collection on must-have items, including the Kanghyuk Readymade Airbag cap, Kanghyuk Readymade Airbag Vegan Parka and Kanghyuk Readymade Airbag windbreaker. The FW20 collection consists of mostly outerwear pieces with a few accessories perfect for the upcoming season.
