Tragedy Strikes with Undercover's AW20 Collection

Jun Takahashi is the creative genius behind Undercover, a Japanese brand that was established in 1990. Working with the likes of Rei Kawakuna (Comme des Garcons), Takahashi’s high-profile pieces have drawn inspiration from various creative outlets like other designers, film, and music. American rock bands also lend creative attribution to his work.

Japanese-based brand Undercover is at it again with a roster of movie-inspired pieces and looks for their stellar AW20 collection. Unfamiliar with drawing creative-sparks from media, Jun Takahashi looked to Japanese film Throne of Blood for this collection’s looks. The film is a version of “Macbeth” that is set in feudal Japan, tragedy and all.

Remnants of Throne of Blood’s motifs are found brandished throughout this collection. Arrows and samurais are amongst the majority of designs here. The Throne of Blood Coat in Black is a beautiful piece. The lengthy coat exhibits a graphic of an iconic scene from the movie with a lustrous, black finish along the garment. There’s also an embroidered centipede along the breast that alludes to the insignia of the Toshiro Mifune’s character’s flag. There’s also the “Blood Teachings” shirt that possesses a great detail of craftsmanship with stitched-on Undercover and samurai motif labeling accommodated by a vibrant red and green graphic printed on the back. Choosing the right garment and movie scene to rock is the real tragedy.
