In honor of Air Max Day, we’re highlighting the evolution of the iconic Air Max silhouettes. Nike Air Max has been a staple sneaker ever since the original launch of the Air Max 1 in 1987 and we are highlighting the Iconic Nike Air Max campaigns in the above images.

What keeps the Air Max so popular? The evolving Air technology made to the Air Max silhouette as well as the ever-changing designs. Below we’re highlighting the timeline of the Air Max silhouettes and some key facts that set them apart from their other counterparts. 

The Nike Air Max 1 initially launched in 1987 by designer Tinker Hatfield and set the tone for a sleek yet comfortable sneaker. The Nike Air Max 1 is also often referred to as the Air Max ‘87. Hatfield had the vision to design the first sneaker with a window in the sole made from Nike’s Air Cushioning Technology. Then the Air Max 90, also designed by Tinker Hatfield, reworked the Air Max sneaker for the new decade. Since the initial release, the Air Max 90 has been one of the most popular sneakers in the world. The midsole was separated into front and back compartments to allow for a full range of performance and different material options. Following, the Air Max 180, designed in 1991, was the first Nike sneaker to display Air technology on its outsole. The sneaker gets its name for being able to have a 180-degree view of visible air and containing 50% more Air than previous Air Max shoes in the back. Next, the Air Max 93, designed by Tinker Hatfield, was the first silhouette to deliver colored Air units. The sneaker was also the first sneaker to introduce 270 degrees of exposed Air. The Air Max 95 made its original debut in 1995. The sneaker released a revolutionary design that featured contrasting neon yellow in multiple air units. Legendary designer, Sergio Lozana, delivered a functional layer construction technique on the upper to the midsole. The silhouette was also the first Air Max model to have a black midsole. At first, the Air Max 95 wasn’t a fan favorite, however, over time the Air Max 95 quickly became an icon in youth and streetwear culture. Lastly, the Air Max 97 released in the original ‘Silver Bullet’ colorway that featured a full-length visible air sole. Designed by Christian Tressler, the shoe was inspired by waterdrops making ripples in a pond. This silhouette was the first Air Sole developed specifically for running. 

Since then, the evolution and technology of the Air Max continues to grow while solidifying their presence in sneaker history.

To celebrate Nike Air Max Day 2020 on Thursday, March 26, Nike is releasing multiple Air Max’s to honor the iconic technology and history of the Air Max. Two highly anticipated releases are the Nike Air Max 2090 and the Nike Air Max 90 ‘Duck Camo’ pack. Both shoes showcase an infrared and black colorway that highlights a duck camo print in two unique ways. The Nike Air Max 2090 draws its foundational cues from the classic Air Max 90, but with a twist. The silhouette offers a darker complexion and a singular black hue over most of the upper and full body. However, accents can be seen in the heel and midsole with the popular infrared colorway. The silhouette also uses a duck camouflage that is hidden under the all-black semi-transparent textile upper. On the other hand, the Air Max 90 ‘Duck Camo’ showcases the classic silhouette but with a bold twist in design and colorway. The 90’s silhouette features an infrared upper with a duck camouflage overlay on the mudguard and quarter panels. Black detailing can be seen throughout with a white midsole to complete the overall design. 

The Air Max 90 SP ‘Medal Pack’ also releases on Air Max Day to celebrate Nike’s most innovative technology and the Summer Olympic Games. Both silhouettes feature an all-white sole unit with an upper comprised of a completely metallic finish. The pack is available in women’s and toddler sizing in ‘Chrome’ and ‘Metallic Gold.’
