Undercover was founded by Japanese designer Jun Takahashi in 1990. Since its inception, Undercover has established itself as a brand that encompasses both streetwear and high fashion, which is inspired by Takahashi’s punk roots and American rock bands. Undercover’s motto is “We make noise, not clothes” and they continue to push this message throughout their classic streetwear style and different collections.
Previous to starting Undercover, Takahashi was in a punk tribute band called Tokyo Sex Pistols were a lot of his influence can be found from. Takahashi was infatuated with the iconic British rock band The Sex Pistols in the ‘70s and their signature style. During this time, Takahashi also enrolled himself in Tokyo’s Bunka Fashion College in 1998. A few years later he eventually went on to launch Undercover inspired by all of his past experiences. After establishing himself in the menswear industry, Takahashi presented his first women’s show in 1994 which caught the attention of Comme des Garcons designer, Rei Kawakubo. Kawakubo became a big supporter of Takahashi’s work and eventually inspired him to take his work outside of Japan. Kawakubo’s intuition was right as Undercover shortly became a major international brand popular with the masses.
Undercover first revealed their latest SS20 collection at Paris Fashion Week which featured the theme of “the devil within all of us.” Undercover’s SS20 collection is inspired from the 1929 horror film, Nosferatu, as well as American photographer Cindy Sherman’s iconic Untitled Film Stills from the 1970s. Undercover’s Paris Fashion Week show started off with spiderweb pleating and an almost entirely black collection. The infamous figure of Nosferatu’s Transylvanian vampire and ominous crescent mood can be found on a mix of pieces from blazers and more, while Sherman’s films can be found on more simple pieces like t-shirts and sweaters. The Paris Fashion Week show could be described as eerie and dark while haunting music played in the background. The collection presented staple dramatics with a stylish and refined look.
