Nike Air Max 90 ‘Bacon’ Release March 26th
Chelsie Rendon
When Nike introduced the exposed Air bubble in 1987, sneaker and fashion enthusiasts knew that Nike was looking towards the future. Their designs redefined the shoe game and made others think, what could possibly be next? But of course, year after year they tend to outdo themselves by producing concepts and silhouettes that set the standard high for footwear. So when the Air Max 90 released in 1990, it was an instant hit as people saw an elevated version of the original with materials that gave the sneakers a luxurious finish. The even wider transparent bubble took up more of the heel while a new Duromesh upper emphasized its breathability capabilities. Along with those changes, Nike also provided thermoplastic straps within its design as a nod to the previous version, the Air Max Light. This model reminded many of the original model with modern touches. But what captivated audiences more was its complexion. When it was initially released the first color to hit the market was a bright red with black, white, and grey off-sets. This color grabbed attention, and was also very trendy, but this colorway grew in popularity and is now referred to as ‘Infrared.’ This color combination is now seen on many Nike sneakers but a lot of casual consumers don’t realize its significant roots. Nike footwear designer, Tinker Hatfield, was the soul behind the shoe- as he wanted to showcase the Air technology that is implemented within the midsoles. It was his design and forward thinking that allowed the Air Max to become what it is today.
The Air Max 90 has become a popular model within the Air Max line and has seen many iterations over the years. The sneaker’s popularity never slowed down, instead it grew even greater with time as Nike would reintroduce classic colorways and retro versions of the shoe. Now celebrating its 31st anniversary, we are reminded of the great success seen within the model. This sneaker has taken up many collaborations including ‘The Ten’ with Virgil Abloh and the ‘Warhawk’ a design that pays tribute to fighters in World War II. Its timeless silhouette can take on many looks but to commemorate its initial launch, the sneaker will be re-introduced in a sought-after colorway, ‘Bacon.’
Originally released in 2004, the ‘Bacon’ was an exciting and fun colorway that combined neutral tones with bright hues that offer a softer side to mens fashion. Nike specifically picked colors that would speak towards the breakfast delicacy without it being overpowering and a fashion facade. As Air Max Day approaches, Nike will release the exclusive design once again. The sneaker is met with fine tuned details which contribute to its overall design. Premium leather constructs the upper while a quality fabric is seen at the tongue in a pink hue. Cotton knitted laces and inner sock lining resembles creamed coffee whereas the rubber outsole and thermoplastic straps champion a rich brown. Suede overlays and stitched motifs decorate the shoe providing its original design. The transparent Air Bubble sticks true to its predecessors as it offers ultimate comfort and a lightweight design. The Air Max 90 ‘Bacon’ is easy to wear and incredibly comfortable. Many celebrities and athletes have sworn by Nike’s Air technology and the 90s model. This sneaker has contributed to street style and fashion history and we cannot wait until its release.
