Past Meets Future with the PUMA Mirage Sport

Chelsie Rendon

The footwear industry is constantly changing and Puma continues to introduce quality designs that don’t stray from their origins. Founded in 1948 by Rudolf Dassler, Puma was made for comfort and sport. When the West German national football team wore Puma boots during their first match after World War II, the footwear label increasingly grew in popularity as many wanted to wear the same sneakers as the team. As years went on, Dassler created more sneakers for athletes including track and field. After sponsoring Tommie Smith and John Carlos in the ‘68 Olympics it was clear that they were able to develop a great running shoe and in 1978 Puma debuted their Mirage silhouette. The Mirage was originally made for athletic purposes, but many enjoyed its timeless look and comfortable qualities; over time it was translated over to casual wear. The Mirage is now a prevalent design within Puma’s repertoire and this summer, the footwear brand reimagines the original sneaker with industrial elements.

Puma brings the original Mirage back from the archives with contemporary finishes that follow modern styles. Introduced in a Steel Grey and Grey Violet colorway, the muted tones are complemented by neutral hues of cream, white, and tans. Puma purposely chose this palette for the introduction as they want the consumer to truly enjoy its construction and premium qualities. A mesh upper is detailed with varying textile overlays including leather and suede. Puma’s signature Formstrip takes a subtle approach upon the side panels offering a seamless look overall. The sneaker features a cushioned insole and TPU clip. These elements contribute to a comfortable fit as the heel clip emphasizes stability with each step no matter what terrain you find yourself in.

Unique qualities are seen throughout the shoe’s design including exposed foam at the heel and various disconnected details. Puma’s Design Lead for Sportstyle Footwear, Danny Taylor, relates these attributes to the development of every sneaker and honors manufacturing imperfections. The intentional designs follow a functional and tactical finish that many look for in footwear and apparel. To complete the sneaker’s build, featured qualities include plastic details at the tongue, a heel pull tab for easy application, and distinct Puma branding emphasizing its authenticity. The Mirage Sport is a classic silhouette with unconventional elements that can be easily incorporated into any footwear collection.
