Staying Comfortable with Helmut Lang Spring ‘21

Staying Comfortable with Helmut Lang Spring ‘21

Chelsie Rendon

Helmut Lang has cultivated streetwear and fashion with his minimalist approach to style. At a young age, he was introduced to the art of design by his grandfather. As a shoe cobbler, his grandfather’s particular style and care for the design was distinct which inspired him to venture onto his own fashion journey. During his early twenties, he took his first steps towards starting his own line by opening up a studio in 1977. The city of Vienna really enjoyed his Avant guard style and fine-cut approach to clothing. By the 80s he became solidified within his country and started expanding into larger markets. He always knew that his namesake could become grander and the high-end lifestyle was his true calling. In 1986, he made his first debut during London Fashion Week and since then Lang has made monumental strides for fashion. These historic moments include inventing the initial designer jean, introducing co-ed fashion shows, and the original online stream of a collection in 1998. Helmut Lang has become immensely influential within many categories and his brand continues to live on.

Conforming to an urban lifestyle that follows the minimalistic and utilitarian aesthetic, the latest collection introduces new pieces that revert to the brand’s origins. Within the spring 2021 collection, the fashion label truly focuses on comfort. With the unprecedented times, they took note of everyone staying indoors and utilized this collection to tailor pieces that are appropriate for indoor and outdoor wear. The fine-tailored garments do not skimp on comfort but instead, they offer an elevated appearance to casual clothing.

Making an introduction within the collection, the Aviator Crew elevates the casual silhouette with a striking hue and unique detailing. Utilizing premium French terry cotton, the crewneck sweater is made for a leisurely lifestyle or eventful outing. An Electric Green colorway is a subtle rendition of neon while flush branding is incorporated within the rear. To coincide with the script, details include an industrial style strap that reverts to the unconventional styling from the brand’s roots. We see the same type of theme with the Polo Tee as it utilizes a quarter-zip closure in comparison to the traditional button closure. The Polo is met with similar branding and is cut with premium cotton for a soft touch that is comfortable for all occasions.

The collection also contains two new hoodies, both sharing the distinct Helmut Lang text. The GD Hoodie is treated with a garment dye for its distinct coloring while a cotton complexion offers a cozy experience. The garment is made for a standard fit while kangaroo pockets and adjustable drawstrings emphasize its leisurely attributes. The Recycled Hoodie sees similar cues but instead, the fabrication consist of recycled cotton and polyester. With sustainability in mind, the fashion label strives to reduce its green footprint by implementing practices that are better for the environment. Similar processes are seen within the Recycled T-Shirt. Its coastal Fog colorway stands out with its jersey design and recycled fabrication.
