Nike Dunk High 'Maize & Blue' Releases September 23rd
Marissa Villamor
Nike College Colors Program introduces its latest edition of the Nike Dunk High in a University of Michigan colorway of maize and blue. Nike first introduced the College Colors Program in 1985 to feature a collection of footwear and matching apparel for some of the most fan-favorite universities in the States. The program helped introduce the Nike Dunk silhouette to the world of basketball and different universities; it features colors for specific schools, with the simple colors adopted by both college and high schools.
Created by iconic designer Peter Moore, the Nike Dunk High was a mash-up of different silhouettes and ‘80s basketball shoes. The shape resembles that of the Air Jordan 1, which was also created by Peter Moore during similar times. A few similarities include the upper as the Dunk’s upper takes cues from the Air Jordan 1. However, the dunks feature ankle lace flaps used for extra support, where the Jordan’s do not. Other differences can be found in the sole, as the Air Jordan 1 contains Air in the Midsole, which the Dunks do not. Additional small details include the Swoosh. On the Air Jordan 1’s, the Nike Swoosh cuts through the heel of the silhouette, where on the Dunks, the Swoosh is on top of the heel instead of cutting through. Although holding very similar qualities, the Nike Dunk Highs have been a fan-favorite since its inception and especially through the Nike College Colors Program.
Returning again, the Nike Dunk High ‘Maize & Blue’ is set to release this Wednesday, September 23. The silhouette features a Midnight Navy and Varsity Maize full-grain leather upper, OG tooling and a mesh tongue. The retro release of this silhouette continues the 30th-anniversary celebration of the College Colors Program by Nike.
