Stussy has paved the way for streetwear as one of the most dignified brands within the industry. Created by Shawn Stussy, the brand initially made its debut within the surf community. In 1980, Shawn was known for his workmanship on surfboards. With each handcrafted board, he would sign his name with a marker, solidifying its premium construction. This signature would make its way onto clothing which he would sell out of his car and at surf conventions. While his passion remained in surf culture, he also realized his potential within the fashion industry. The company officially came to fruition in 1984 and expanded into other cities and countries. Shawn Stussy’s distinct signage would become synonymous with the brand and take over the streetwear industry as a variety of sub-cultures would champion their clothing.
Many communities adopted the brand and made it a staple with their closets. From punk bands to the surf scene in California, they found a common ground with Stussy apparel. A variety of communities embraced the designs, making them rise in popularity. With its rapid growth, the company became well-known throughout the industry and introduced unique collaborations that celebrated diverse names. Stussy’s growth in hip-hop and rap lead to a collaboration with renowned music group A Tribe Called Quest. They were also able to bridge the gap between high fashion and streetwear by partnering with Marc Jacobs and introducing an exclusive Shawn Stussy collection with Dior. But some of the most sought-after designs include its footwear projects with Nike and Rei Kawakubo’s, Comme des Garçons.
The fashion label continues to release seasonal collections; their most recent being the Summer ‘21 delivery. Each style has a clear and sharp point of view as the label tailors multilayered styles for everyday wear. The use of bold colors and patterns are given a clean aesthetic that balances their idea of madness versus calmness. The collection includes staple Stussy styles along with an updated version of signature garments and casual pieces.
Known for its graphic tees, the capsule includes iconic imagery as seen with the 8 Ball Tee and the Full Deck 2 Tee. The Its a Wild Life Tee and Camellias Pigment-Dyed Tee make their debut within this season as they combine natural aesthetics with distinct Stussy branding. Crafted from premium cotton, the tees are treated with premium craftsmanship as a rib-knit stitch is incorporated within the crewneck and printed imagery falls flush upon the quality cotton base.
Statement pieces are also visited within the delivery. Matching sets are designed for individual wear or can be paired together for a bold look. The Madras Patchwork Zip Jacket and Relaxed Pant is an example of this theme as mismatched colors of plaid decorate the premium design. The Spotted Bleach Chore Jacket and Work Pant follow similar cues as the pair includes elevated fabrication and acid wash treatments. Diverging from traditional summer styles, the capsule includes staple transitional pieces that can be styled in varied ways. The Flower Embroidered Denim Shirt is a traditional design that is elevated with stitch and vibrant imagery on the backside. Whereas the Heritage Plaid Zip Shirt reverts to the classics with a twist. Its yarn-dyed fabric features a full-length zipper instead of a classic button closure.
Summer-ready styles including their famed Wide Brim Bucket Hat and Stock Low Pro Cap make an appearance with new colorways. These accessories can be paired with the Smooth Stock Water Shorts for a cool experience during the summer heat. The Summer ‘21 Collection from Stussy is now available online.
