Asics has developed into a leading footwear powerhouse that has dominated the market with exciting releases and collaborations. Created in 1949, Asics was originally named Onitsuka Company Limited by its founder Kahachiro Onitsuka. He noticed a shortage of sneakers and set forth on a footwear journey with a goal to provide sneakers for the younger generation so they can live an active lifestyle.  Kahachiro started with basketball shoes which were instantly successful, this led to other performance sneakers including running. One of the most notable moments was when the brand teamed up with Phil Knight and helped produce sneakers for Blue Ribbon Sports. Eventually, Onitsuka would jump-start the Nike empire. But over time the footwear label became larger and merged with two other companies which led to rebranding. With Onitsuka still at the forefront, they came to the conclusion and called themselves Asics. With the name change in 1977, Asics became even larger as time prevailed which allowed them to create some of the most iconic shoes: Gel-Lyte, Gel-Kayano, and the GT models to name a few. Brands including Sneaker Freaker, Slam Jam, and Comme des Garçons are just a few of the notable names that have worked alongside the footwear label. They would eventually partner with renowned designers such as Sean Wotherspoon, Patta, Ronnie Fieg, and Vivienne Westwood.  This spring, they continue their partnership with Westwood as they introduce a rendered version of the signature Gel-Kayano 27. 

Born in England, Vivienne Westwood was a self-taught designer who got her start by producing rendered vintage tees with unconventional cuts. Inspired by the punk music scene, she had a unique outlook on fashion which made her stand out within the sea of designers. In 1985 she really solidified her name as she debuted her spring-summer collection. This delivery included references from classical paintings and historical British dresses. Since then she has become a legend within the industry. She has opened and operated many boutiques and introduced a wide range of collections including menswear, accessories, and wedding dresses. Her mark on fashion history is incredibly influential as she is known for introducing punk music and its style into high fashion. She usually works for her namesake but she has also ventured into other projects including a collaboration with Vans and Burberry. The most recent project includes Asics as they highlight Westwood’s vintage and unconventional rise to stardom. 

As a continuation of the gel saga, the latest Asics is seen with a raw design that combines tactical details with striking color combinations. The GEL-Kayano 27 is one of Asics most advanced running shoes which include Dynamic Duomax technology; offering extreme stability during times of athleticism. Its construction consists of a mesh upper providing optimal breathability and a flexible sole unit that emphasizes a natural experience. Unique stitching is placed throughout the upper along with Westwood’s classic branding which commemorates the collaborative efforts. Reflective accents are implemented throughout making the shoe capable for nighttime activities. Those who are avid fashion enthusiasts are extremely excited for the latest sneaker collaboration as it celebrates Westwood’s distinctive style upon a premium Asics model.
