'Red Sole'

First making its introduction in 2002, Rei Kawakubo’s iconic diffusion line Comme des Garçons PLAY identifies itself as a more functional and casual version of the brand’s primary line, Comme des Garçons. The sub-label is well-versed in crafting non-conforming styles that make an impression on younger clients. Considered the most popular and sought-after diffusion line of Comme des Garçons, the iconic bug-eyed red heart motif is the face of the label. Designed by graphic artist Filip Pagowski, the bug-eyed red heart motif combined with the brand's elevated wardrobe essentials has established itself as a leader in the fashion industry.

Almost 100 years earlier, the legendary footwear brand Converse was brought onto the scene to create basketball shoes. The brand made the first-ever mass-produced basketball shoe in North America, including a thick rubber sole and ankle-covering canvas upper. These two attributes provided optimal comfort and support needed while on the court. Also known as the Chuck Taylor brand, the label reinvented the sport of basketball. As the brand continued to grow, the brand expanded beyond basketball shoes and became notable among subcultures across the globe. The sneakers made an impression on young adults and musicians, as the brand’s ‘perfect canvas’ sneakers allowed its wearers to express themselves authentically.

Fast forward to 2009, and a groundbreaking moment was held when Comme des Garçons PLAY and Converse collided to introduce a collaborative version of the iconic Chuck Taylor All Star. As a precursor to the Chuck 70 released in 2015, this sneaker staple was more than just a plain sneaker stamped with a red heart. Minimalist yet elevated in its aesthetic, the Converse x Comme des Garçons collaborative sneakers shaped contemporary fashion as the world knew it. This ongoing collaboration has spawned countless variations of the Chuck Taylor with its high and low-cut variations, different shades, and variations of bug-eyed red hearts placed throughout it. These sneakers represent the intersection of fashion and sneakers, resulting in a testament to both brands’ overall fashion influence.

With that, Converse and Comme des Garçons PLAY continue with the next chapter in their 12-year partnership by introducing a reimagined version of the iconic Chuck 70. This new introduction features a first-ever glossy red midsole titled ‘Red Sole.’ Inspired by the iconic red heart and featured in a variation of hi and lo options, the silhouettes sport a premium canvas upper which is stamped with the iconic Chuck Taylor ankle patch at one side, while the other side spotlights a signature bug-eyed red heart motif in honor of Comme des Garçons PLAY. The glossy bright red midsole is treated with contrasting pinstripe detailing, furthering the design’s unique aesthetic. Detailed stitching is placed throughout the exterior, while the printed co-branding at the insole makes an appearance. A rubber outsole underneath offers a durable finish.
