Stüssy x Nike Air Max 2013 Release August 12th
Haven Neiman
Stüssy and Nike are both powerhouses in the world of sneakers and streetwear. For Stüssy, the label made its name in the 80s due to its owner Shawn Stussy’s creative flair, including him selling surfboards to the locals of Laguna Beach. These surfboards featured Stussy’s last name scribbled on the board in a marker pen. Although Shawn Stussy moved on from the label in the 90s, the brand has since become a true trailblazer within the street culture industry. As for Nike, this powerhouse brand is probably the most well-known one out there. Founded in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight and originally given the name ‘Blue Ribbon Sports,’ the sportswear and lifestyle brand has paved the way for future brands alike, having reached massive heights with the fashion industry, partially due to its compelling collaborations.
First joining forces in 2000 in Stüssy’s UK office, the story of the two brands together all started when Stüssy UK’s Michael Koppelman approached Fraser Cooke, a Nike employee, regarding a possible ‘special edition version’ of their favorite Nike sneaker to be sold in their store. The result was none other than the Nike Air Huarache. Since then the Stüssy x Nike collaboration has grown to introduce a variety of collaborative silhouettes, such as the SB Dunk as seen in the Stüssy x Nike SB Dunk Low ‘Cherry,’ and other silhouettes like the Air Max 95, Blazer Low/Mid, and Air Force 1. The most recent Stüssy x Nike collaboration is presented on a throwback silhouette—the Stüssy x Nike Air Force 2013 ‘Fossil.’
Originally unreleased at the time of writing, the Air Max 2013 was a rarely seen running silhouette from Nike. Referencing design traits from the Air Max 2015 in the form of the unique reverse Swoosh branding, the pair also sports a full-length Air Max midsole and Stüssy logo tabs at both lateral sides. A shoe-length air pocket is placed, although this is concealed by a tonal outside color in a ‘Fossil’ colorway. This deeper cut into Nike’s repertoire makes a statement throughout the duo’s history. Mesh and Hyperfuse overlays are displayed throughout the upper, while underneath the wide holes of mesh is a gradient hue spreading from the toe box to the midfoot and heel. Flywire cables are treated with a reflective 3M material. The thin foam midsole provides added comfort, while the rubber outsole underneath protects the look.
