Release July 24th

Just like many of Jordan’s inimitable sneakers, the 12’s weigh heavy on the brand’s timeline as it is correlated with one of the greatest games Michael Jordan has ever played. During the 1997 NBA Finals, Jordan played an incredible game which eventually contributed to their 3-2 lead against the Utah Jazz. The game was memorable due to the fact that Michael Jordan was sick as he played. Come to find out that he was experiencing severe food poisoning as stated in the documentary The Last Dance. Many remember Jordan being doused with icepacks during timeouts and being carried off the courts by teammates. He completely pushed himself throughout the game and ultimately helped the team to achieve victory. Because of his perseverance, many would favor his sneakers which would be nicknamed, ‘Flu Game.’ The black and red Jordan 12 would only grow in popularity and become the desired style by Jordan fans and sneaker enthusiasts.

Introduced in 1996, the sneaker was developed by Tinker Hatfield and made its debut in a classic black and white colorway. In the following year, the sneaker would be released in four more original colorways which included the ‘Cherry’ and ‘Flu Game’ silhouette. When Hatfield developed the sneaker, he wanted to try something different and grasp inspiration from Japanese culture. The unique stitching seen at the side panels resembles the Japanese Rising Sun flag. Referencing line work from sun rays, the design gives the leather a dimensional touch. In addition to its unique design, the footwear brand also released highly sought-after styles and colors. The OVO version of the Air Jordan 12 Retro was exclusively released as well as the 2019 ‘Chinese New Year,’ ‘Reverse Flu Game,’ and the ‘Friends and Family’ collaborative design with PSNY.

The sneaker is well respected by many including NBA athletes including Scottie Pippen, Bill Wennington, and Luc Longley. Therefore both Nike and Jordan have specifically released new variants of the signature sneaker. As a part of their Jordan Brand Fall 2021 collection, the sneaker is featured in a new colorway that puts a twist on the original ‘Cherry’ colorway. A tumbled leather upper includes the classic stitching throughout while metallic accents are featured at the eyelets as a nod to the previous ‘Metallic Pack.’ Lizard skin leather is placed at the mudguards for optimal protection and stands out against the monochromatic style. The inner lining is designed in a contrasting colorway that coincides with the heel pull tab for easy application. A rubber outsole protects the iconic Nike Air technology for optimal cushioning and a propelling sensation with each step.
