Air Jordan 1 Hi OG
‘Rebellionaire’
Considered the sneaker that started it all, the Air Jordan 1’s legacy is nothing short of impactful. It all began when the NBA legend Michael Jordan took the court wearing a pair of Air Jordan 1s on October 18, 1984. Although the public later found out he was sporting a pair of Air Ships because the Air Jordan 1 wasn’t quite ready, the silhouette, predominantly cloaked with a red and black hue, didn’t adhere to the NBA’s uniform guidelines. This violation kept repeating, resulting in Michael Jordan receiving a stern letter from the NBA commission. The shoe officially launched at the end of Michael Jordan’s rookie season and was paired with the iconic ‘Banned’ commercial inspired by Michael Jordan’s defiance against the NBA uniform guidelines.
The Air Jordan 1 set a precedent for future sneaker designs, which eventually became a full-fledged brand. The Jordan Brand officially became its own in 1998 and has since introduced a range of sneakers within the Jordan Brand repertoire along with countless different colorways and variations. With that, the Jordan Brand presents its latest rendition of the iconic Air Jordan 1—the Air Jordan 1 Hi OG ‘Rebellionaire.’ Inspired by Michael Jordan’s rebellious spirit stemming from him defying the NBA’s uniform guidelines and choosing to wear his footwear on the court, the Air Jordan 1 Hi OG ‘Rebellionaire’ connects that moment to the future success of the brand, which has become a blueprint for current and future artists paving the way to write their own stories. Although Michael Jordan’s illustrious basketball career contains a multitude of game-winning buzzer beats and dunks, this design is rooted in Michael’s rebellious aesthetics.
The classic leather upper spotlights dark and monochromatic color-blocking placed throughout the design. The iconic phrase ‘They Can’t Stop You From Wearing Them’ is scattered throughout the exterior in graffiti-like font, nodding to the iconic Banned commercial introduced to the world in 1985. A classic perforated toe box is placed along with signature Jordan branding that can be seen at the signature Wings motif and within the embroidered tongue. The graffiti-like X’s at the heel call out the iconic ‘Banned’ colorway of the Air Jordan 1 released in 2011, featuring a distinct red hue. The rubber outsole underneath the silhouette ties together the remainder of the look while optimizing durability and traction.
