Timeless Footwear by Vans Vault
Chelsie Rendon
When Vans opened its doors in 1966, the Van Doren brothers were committed to producing footwear designs that were durable and had the ability to outlast fashion trends. Forty-plus years later, Vans is still a prominent name within the industry and has grown into more than just shoes. From athletic teams to clothing lines, the label has ventured into many categories but they will always be remembered for their signature styles. To commemorate their designs and shine a light on previous silhouettes, Vans debuted Vault by Vans in 2003. This sub-label would focus on archival patterns and sneakers- offering a vintage aesthetic with each release.
Since its debut, Vans Vault has brought back signature footwear along with introducing vintage styles within collaborations. Brands and artists including Wacko Maria, Taka Hayashi, Patta, UNDERCOVER, and Noon Goons have released projects with Vault that revert to traditional footwear developed in the company’s earlier years. Favorite models are given a premium touch with Vault contributing a long-lasting and durable finish. As the footwear label continues to release unique and bold designs, we wanted to emphasize the sneakers that started it all and how Vault elevated its design.
Van’s first style is still one of the most recognizable designs to this day; the Authentic was popularized through skate culture and the beach cities surrounding Anaheim, California. The OG Authentic LX stays true to the original with fine-tuned touches. A midweight canvas constructs the upper while a thicker vulcanized outsole contributes to its durability. Van’s signature waffle rubber is seen underneath for optimal traction and stability. Whereas the inner midsole is upgraded with more cushioning for long-lasting comfort. Signature details are seen throughout including its ‘Off The Wall’ plate at the heel and the sewn label near the laces.
Similar touches can be seen upon the OG Old-Skool LX and OG Sk8-Hi LX. Premium materials including leather are sewn within the inner lining while quality cuts of canvas and suede construct the upper. Vault implements more padding within the collar and midsole contributing to its comfortable stature. Lastly, Vault by Vans elevates the classic Slip-On. When Sean Penn wore the signature checkerboard Slip-On in Fast Times at Ridgemont High the world wanted a pair for themselves. The sneaker is still just as popular to this day and is made to outlast any trials with its premium design. The OG Classic Slip-On is the spitting image of the original with qualities that enhance its demeanor. From its thicker vulcanized outsole to its padded rim, the sneaker is the perfect blend of retro and modern.
