‘Racer Blue’
Release July 10th
The revolutionary design of the Air Jordan 3 set the bar high for future basketball shoes as it saved Nike’s partnership with Michael Jordan. As summer is in full swing, the footwear giant is set to release the latest version of the sneaker in the ‘Racer Blue’ colorway. The first-ever blue iteration made its debut during the original release in 1988 and featured a darker hue reminiscent of navy. Designed by Air Max creator Tinker Hatfield, the sneaker was on trepid waters as Michael Jordan’s contract was meeting its end. But thankfully, Jordan enjoyed his relationship with Nike and prevailed with Tinker Hatfield to create the 3. But what really made Jordan stick with Nike was the first-ever introduction of his iconic Jumpman emblem on the tongue. This motif along with the sleek design of the sneaker and elephant print solidified his decision and continued the ongoing relationship.
The ‘Black Cement’ and ‘White Cement’ colorway would begin the sneaker’s success as Jordan would wear them prior to release and win the Slam Dunk Contest during All-Star Weekend in ‘88. In 2001, the Air Jordan 3 would meet its retroversion and introduce OG colorways alongside new renditions of the sneaker including ‘Mocha,’ ‘Fire Red,’ and ‘Black Cat.’ This July Jordan Brand is set to release the latest edition of the shoe by diverging from his typical Chicago and UNC palettes.
Taking cues from the original construct, the Jordan 3s are dressed in a complete tumbled leather upper with complementing accents of grey seen at the perforated forefoot and eyelets. The ‘Racer Blue’ color makes its appearance at the collar, tongue, and outsole for a cohesive design. Jordan’s Jumpman emblem is woven at the tongue paying homage to the OG models. Elephant print overlays decorate the heel and rounded toebox tying everything together. Unmistakable comfort is placed at the midsole as Nike’s Air technology offers optimal cushioning for sport and casual activities. This technology is emphasized at the heel as seen with the transparent window and bubble. This sneaker is a fan favorite as the cushioning is also transferred to the upper midsole for a propelling and responsive experience unseen in previous pairs. Perfect for warm seasons, the design can be worn in a variety of styles due to its monochromatic and neutral complexion.
