The LeBron XVII in Multicolor Releases on January 14th

Chelsie Rendon

The beginning of Nike and LeBron’s relationship came to fruition in 2003. Since then, they’ve developed a lineage of basketball sneakers that transformed the game of basketball and the idea of fashion on the court. The Air Zoom Generation was LeBron’s first design when teaming up with Nike; now, the sneaker is onto its eighteenth edition, showcasing upgraded technology and unique construction.

In his 17th season, James showcased the LeBron XVII’s for the first time during a Laker’s scrimmage in July 2020. Though the shoes were recognized instantly as a new design, the news didn’t spread in its usual manner. Because of this unusual past season, the NBA games were played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida. With this location change and upgraded precaution, the shoes were only displayed to a limited amount of photographers and reporters. But soon enough LeBron wore the shoes during the NBA finals where the LA Lakers secured the 2020 Championship game and James was voted as MVP. Though there weren’t any fans in attendance, thousands of people watched the celebrations on television and were able to get their first glimpses of LeBron’s latest model.

The LeBron XVII in Multicolor features the latest basketball technologies that provide comfort during times of athleticism. The 18’s utilize both Max Air and Zoom Air technology, both loved by James. Within the shoe, the Max Air is integrated within the heel whereas the Zoom Air bubble is placed along the shoe covering its full length. The Max and Zoom combination contributes to the comfort but also the reaction of pressure against the shoe. The use of the Knitposite 2.0 covers the upper portion of the sneaker creating a lightweight and durable composite that can withstand the forces generated by the athlete. Utilizing the same material, the knit rib cage reaches down to the footbed creating a more secure support system within the structure.

Another feature that is highlighted is the non-pressurized air pockets against the tongue of the sneaker. Usually, the tongue consists of foam materials, but instead, the transparent bubble provides an opportunity for color depending on the sock worn. The traction is elevated as the rubber sole is introduced with thin siping allowing the user to feel closer to the ground without skimping on cushioning. To complete the look, specialized LeBron branding is molded on each sneaker’s back midsole; the first saying “From the City of Akron, Ohio” paying homage to his hometown, the second stating “establish Nineteen Eighty Four” which is the year he was born.
