Retro Meets Modern with Kappa Spring ‘21

Chelsie Rendon

The sock and underwear company, Maglificio Calzificio Torinese, aspired to grow into different genres and to obtain this growth they decided to that the next step towards expansion would be clothing. As time prevailed their clothing grew in popularity, thus they needed to officially start a sub-label. The brand would be formally titled ‘Kappa’ in 1967. Moving forward they would focus on elevating casual clothing but also work on functionality as many described their needs for comfort and sophistication. But what drew the younger generation towards the brand was the eccentric and distinct branding. The fashion-label had a unique way of marketing that wasn’t commonly seen. Many would recognize the stripes of Tommy Hilfiger or the horse of Polo, but Kappa’s motifs are what really stole the show. In 1969, the brand had a photoshoot and had a man and woman sit back to back. This was a statement towards gender equality and how fashion is applicable to all. This iconic statement would lead into their signature Omini logo we find on Kappa’s collections and designs. With the momentum, they didn’t just stop at casual everyday clothing but extended their efforts into athletic wear as well. They would become sponsors in the Olympics and provide tracksuits for athletes. These tracksuits became a crucial part of their collections as others wanted to wear them too. Looking towards present day fashion, their legendary tracksuits and casual wear are still just as popular and has become a staple look in many closets.

Kappa has highlighted their latest variants of their famed designs along with ready-to-wear essentials. The spring ‘21 collection sees familiar motifs and branding within new colorways and graphics. Vibrant hues compliment distinct clothing while an introduction of sandals are seen within the capsule. Perfect for the warmer weather, the delivery is comfortable and focuses on the signature Omini logo.

Taking on a monochromatic look, the Kappa 222 Banda Deky Trackpants are met with the latest design. The retro style is elevated with modern touches including a premium polyester base which is accented with tape piping along the sides. The tapered fit can be adjusted as the leg cuffs are detailed with a zippered closure. Coinciding with the pants, we are met with various shorts including the Authentic Erya Shorts and the 222 Banda Coneyn Short. Both are designed with a polyester and cotton blend for a comfortable fit that is breathable and lightweight. These shorts can be paired with the various of graphics that made its debut within the collection. Kappa’s Authentic Ebit T-Shirt is a statement piece that can give a casual outfit something extra. Its premium complexion can be seen with the timeless Omini motif in a kaleidoscope design. Along with the embodiment of the pattern, the tee is designed in the colorway Dark Orange which provides its distinct hue. In addition to the striking tee, we are also shown new graphics including the Authentic HB Etas. Taking a more modern approach, the tee still highlights signature branding but incorporates more sophisticated script and shapes. The red and black colorway works well with the contemporary style making the casual piece even more fashionable.

Within the delivery, Kappa’s sandals and footwear make an impact as various colors take on the classic imagery. The Mitel sandal is commonly seen within brand’s repertoire but now the fashion label is introducing the second variant of the shoe titled, Authentic JPN Mitel 2. Utilizing the same overall concept, we see more distinct features upon the nylon upper including the logo decorating the adjustable straps and the inner sole. To get the ideal fit, the straps can be tailored to your style also providing an industrial aesthetic to the shoe. New colors including light blue and orange match perfectly with the other deliveries within the collection. For longevity, Kappa constructs each shoe with a PVC outsole to ensure protection and traction during times of wear. With a long history that dates back to 1916, the company is extremely focused on providing the best in footwear and apparel.
