Air Jordan 2 'Chicago' Release December 30th

Haven Neiman

First making its debut in retail stores a year after the introduction of the Air Jordan 1. The Air Jordan 2 was a pivotal moment in basketball, the fashion industry, and a young Michael Jordan’s basketball career at the time. Its polarizing silhouette was a  risk for Nike, especially since the first Air Jordan model was such a success. Michael Jordan wore Air Jordan 2s during his 1985-1986 NBA season, where he broke countless records along with becoming an NBA All-Star and joining the All-NBA First Team. Along with basketball, the Air Jordan 2 made an impression in the film industry, as Bill Murray sported them during the iconic film Space Jam.

Nike’s intentions with the Air Jordan 2 was to make it more ‘elevated’ in its aesthetic, both on and off the basketball court. One stand-out component to the Air Jordan 2 was its lack of the iconic Nike Swoosh. The sneaker was stripped of the traditional Nike logo and swapped for Jordan Wings branding instead. Designed by sneaker designers Bruce Kilgore and Peter Moore, the original Air Jordan 2 silhouettes were made in Italy, further emphasizing the elevated nature of the design itself. Additional notable attributes of the Air Jordan 2 include its faux lizard skin, extended polyurethane heel counter, and speed lacing system. Some of the most iconic colorways of the Air Jordan 2 include ‘Chicago,’ ‘Grey Fog,’ ‘UNC,’ ‘Wing It,’ ‘University Blue,’ ‘Gym Red,’ ‘Detroit,’ and many more. Alongside iconic colorways, the silhouette has also been spotlighted in iconic collaborations.

Some of these collaborations include Off-White x Air Jordan, Travis Scott x Air Jordan, A Ma Maniére x Air Jordan, and Maison Château Rouge x Air Jordan. Just in time for the Air Jordan 2’s 35th anniversary, the Jordan Brand and Nike introduce the re-release of the iconic Air Jordan 2 in a ‘Chicago’ colorway in a full range of sizing: men’s, grade school, toddler, and preschool. The silhouette takes on a leather upper that is accented by sleek lines and perforations. The signature faux lizard skin overlay makes an impression, while the Nike Swoosh branding is swapped for a Jordan Wings logo. A heel counter is placed, while additional Nike branding can be seen at the rear collar. Air-sole cushioning is seen at the polyurethane midsole, supported by the rubber outsole.
