Chelsie Rendon

Growing up surrounded by humble beginnings, Rhuigi Villasenor has turned his high-fashion/streetwear brand into the empire it is today. Rhude was inspired by Rhuigi’s love for quality clothing. Moving from the Philippines to Los Angeles, the transition took a toll on him. The ideology of not being good at any language stuck to him and his thinking. Because of this pressure, he knew he needed to work hard in order to accomplish his dreams. Rhuigi’s father wanted him to go into the medical field but that wasn’t calling him. Instead, Villasenor studied art and focused on designing. With all of his hard work, he was able to get his first break and begin his clothing brand. Well recognized in the fashion industry  Rhude is worn by icons like Diane Keaton and Kendrick Lamar.

This fall-winter season, Rhude has produced a collection paying homage to American iconography and patterns. A style common throughout the brand’s clothing, Rhuigi takes the iconic designs and gives them a fresh look. Utilizing the pattern paisley, the collection is dressed with this design in different uses. From sneakers to cigarette silhouette bags, the rendition of the paisley pattern is transformed into a modern look fitting for Rhude. Another style found within the pieces is a vintage and thrifted look. The worn-in look is shown in pieces by finding fabric that either gives that used look or pre-washing the material before the sale. Rhuigi’s style has come together by understanding the importance of thrifting and how it feels when you find a holy-grail. The feeling of vintage is something our society craves when it comes to fashion and Rhude exemplifies this in their clothing.

Villasenor’s attention to detail is just one of the many things that make Rhude’s craftsmanship the best. Understanding what feels luxurious but also making it worn-in, is difficult. Yet, the founder has created the perfect balance without skimping out on quality. The Vintage Logo Windbreaker is a statement piece with a neutral twist on the 80s-90s design. Along with the cream and black colorway,  the brand’s logo can be found stretched across the back. The design feels like a piece that was stuck in time, freshen up with a modern redesign. Along with the windbreaker, a pant and hoodie combination sticks out amongst the alternative collection. The design resembles a notebook filled with doodles. Aligning with the time that Rhuigi was in school, the set features nostalgic drawings traditionally found in American culture. The set is iconic on its own - bold and truly unique.
