Nike Air Max ‘Pre-Day’ Release March 26th
Chelsie Rendon
Every year on March 26th, Nike celebrates Air Max Day as it commemorates the day in 1987 where the first model defied the rules design with an exposed Air unit within its outsole. When the Nike Air Max 1 was introduced, all eyes were drawn to its transparent bubble implemented within the heel. Everyone knew that Nike had Air Technology but it was only now that people truly understood its concept. Legendary footwear designer, Tinker Hatfield, developed the first model and decided to implement the exposed window. This futuristic concept gave the 80s sneaker, a contemporary finish. Upon its success, a selection of sneakers also championed the exposed Air Bubble but it wasn’t until the release of the Air Max 90 that people finally accepted and sought-after the bubble. This shoe took the original and amplified the window for an even greater transparent bubble and replaced the fabricated upper with premium materials for a luxe finish. These two shoes solidified the Air Max name within Nike’s line-up and is now one of the most rendered and sought-after silhouettes throughout the years. A variety of sneakers have been implemented in the Air technology: from running, to basketball, and even lifestyle. The transparent bubble has redefined style as its neutral complexion can be tailored into any aesthetic. In celebration of its inception, Nike has introduced the latest Air Max model titled, ‘Pre-Day.’
The Air Max ‘Pre Day’ bridges the gap between retro and modern day styles. The shoe is inspired by a decade, the 70s. When we say a decade, it means that Nike didn’t render a specific shoe or grabbed inspiration from a distinct style, instead they took the 70s as a whole and encapsulated it within the latest sneaker. But of course, the retro inspiration features fine-tuned details that can withstand time and be implemented into modern styles. Its Light Liquid Lime colorway is contrasted by deep hues of black and clean crisp white details, adding neutrality within its vibrancy. Though the model takes on a running silhouette, it is actually a lifestyle shoe that can provide comfort during casual wear or long events. As we look closer into the shoe, we are introduced to materials that elevate the Air Max collection.
Sustainability is held at a high regard within Nike’s design process and the Pre-Day offers eco-friendly materials within its construction that can’t be seen upon the surface. The green upper and laces are constructed with 100% recycled material as a nod towards the future and recycling capabilities. To contrast the upper, synthetic suede accents the material along with a stitched Swoosh upon the side panels. To provide its long lasting comfort, Nike’s iconic exposed Air Bubble can be seen throughout the heel. The bubble is taking on an exaggerated design which contributes to its modern and futuristic look. Coinciding with the bubble, a transparent tongue design emphasizes its modern design. Along the heel, we see embroidered throwback Nike branding as it refers to the shoe’s overall concept. With this introduction, Nike wants to keep sustainability at the top of their minds and continue to work towards diminishing their green-footprint. As Air Max Day approaches, many anticipate the Pre-Day’s release due to its nostalgic and unique concepts.
