Nike Dunk Low ‘Varsity Maize’ + ‘Team Green’ Release June 3rd
Chelsie Rendon
Nike’s Dunk High sneaker has become one of the most popular silhouettes as it has paved the way for many designs including the iconic Air Jordan 1. The Dunk has had a cult following since its 1985 release due to its unique way of branding. Upon its release, Nike dubbed Dunk High as the official team shoe for a variety of colleges across the country. The original deal was struck with the University of Michigan, Kentucky, Iowa, Georgetown, Syracuse, St. John’s, and UNLV. Once it was confirmed, the sneaker was then released in color palettes which correlated to the school of choice. These color combinations would then become the most recognizable Dunks of all time and forever be known as the ‘Be True’ or ‘Be True to Your School’ pack.
After its release, the Dunk was vaulted for ten years making the public antsy for the next release. In 1998, the first retro versions of the shoes were released and featured top-quality textiles. This release also included low-cuts of the original hues and the uprising of the Dunks within the skate industry. Later that year, the ‘Goldenrod’ palette seen within the University of Iowa pair would grow in popularity as Nike would collaborate with the iconic Wu-Tang Clan on exclusive sneakers featuring the same colors. Over time Nike has exclusively released variants of the originals as they are still popular since its original release.
This month, Nike reissues the signature styles referred to as the ‘Michigan’ and ‘Spartan Green.’ Releasing June 3rd two versions of the Nike Dunk Low will hit the market in exclusive quantities. Colorways including Varsity Maize and Midnight Navy correlate with the University of Michigan whereas White and Team Green are the classic colors of Michigan State. Both sneakers are dressed with a premium leather base while synthetic overlays in contrasting colors accent the overall aesthetic. Classic branding is stitched on the tongue and heel while a breathable perforated toe box emphasizes its comfortable fit. As Nike continues to roll out signature colorways from the original collection it is rumored that more classic Dunk Lows are set to be released including the ‘Free 99’ and ‘UNC.’
