Founded by designer Chitose Abe, Sacai came to fruition in 1999 based in Tokyo, Japan. After working with iconic designers such as Junya Watanabe and Rei Kawakubo - Abe ventured into her own fashion adventure, launching her label known for its hybrid designs utilizing a mixture of textures and patterns. 

Abe brings a new directive to her seasonal collections each season that seem to focus on either historical figures, fictional characters, or different institutions. This previous season, Abe choose to highlight the infamous Albert Einstein using different quotes and various Einstein graphics. This Spring/Summer 2021 season, we see Abe partnering with American artist Hank Willis Thomas, highlighting the phrase “Love Over Rules.” Thomas is known for his conceptual art installations that utilize word art with bold and iconic statements. Well known for his saying, “Love Over Rules,” the two artists combine their crafts to deliver a stand-out ready-to-wear collection. 

Many pieces this season re-introduce signature Sacai prints, including the use of paisley and plaid. The over-arching theme of “Love Over Rules” allowed Abe to remember parts she has loved about previous collections, leading to her re-introducing them in a brand new way. The modern version of prior styles holds a sense of nostalgia as she reflects on the past. Each piece is also very versatile in the collection - having the capabilities of being mixed and matched with different outfits. 

A few of the stand-out pieces in the collection include the Flannel Plaid Mix Blouson. Combining Hank Willis Thomas’ art with Sacai’s aesthetic, the jacket is a sturdy composition made with premium cotton and luxe detailing. The mix of plaid gives the piece a unique aesthetic, perfectly made as a statement piece or to mix into your everyday ready-to-wear. To go along with the blouson, the two creatives introduce the Sponge Sweat Hoodie. Designed with a dimensional effect, the silver detailings provide a contemporary look to the classic hoodie. Another must-have item in the collection includes the Archive Print Mix long-sleeve shirt. The shirt provides a blank canvas with signature Japanese stylings utilized on the arm sleeves. Intricate stitching is also implemented to combine the unique patterns, while a silver zipper on the chest pocket contrasts the design.
