Originally released in 2018, the Adidas Futurecraft 4D was a spectacle as it introduced new technology within its construction that has never been seen before within the footwear industry. In partnership with a Silicon Valley tech company, the footwear powerhouse was able to create a 4D midsole utilizing a printing method called Digital Light Synthesis. This process utilizes light and oxygen to create a plastic material that emulates traditional cushioning. This responsive cushioning is matched with a Primeknit upper that provides a sock-like fit and optimizes breathability. When it was initially released the price tag was fairly high as the tech wasn’t completely developed but its comfort didn’t go unnoticed. Many were drawn to its futuristic design and how comfortable the sneakers actually were. This technology is now seen on varying models including the Futurecraft Strung, which utilizes the printing capabilities upon its upper- a silhouette completely compromised of the Digital Light Synthesis tech. Another notable sneaker that highlights the webbed midsole is the Adidas x Pharrell Williams Futurecraft collaboration. The high price tag offered a very limited opportunity to obtain the sneaker making it extremely exclusive. Moving forward, Adidas will be introducing new models that will champion the lattice printed cushioning and will grow into becoming one of Adidas’ signature styles. 

Since its initial introduction, Adidas has been working towards perfecting the tech to optimize its overall design. During their 2021 line-up, the footwear label will be re-releasing the original Futurecraft colorway with tailored cushioning. The exclusive sneaker is met with many color combinations but the most sought after is the OG mint.  The prime knit upper is decorated in an all-black colorway while reflective three-stripe motifs make their way upon the side panels. The lattice printed sole is colored in mint green which stands out against its dark base. A full-lace closure and continental rubber outsole that protects the 4D webbing for long-lasting durability and optimizing its traction. The 4D technology works alongside Adidas signature Boost cushioning in hopes to become just as popular within their repertoire. This design reimagines the capabilities of footwear construction and introduces materials that can be utilized moving forth.
