Celebrated every year, Earth Day’s traditions include raising awareness about environmental issues and how to maintain the planet’s health through sustainability efforts. Stemming back to the ‘70s, Earth Day efforts have grown and have been implemented into countless aspects of our cultures, including fashion. In celebration of this year’s Earth Day, we are spotlighting the brands we carry that are committed to sustainable practices and reducing their environmental impact. In other words, these brands celebrate Earth Day every day. Continue reading to learn about how brands like Nike, Veja, Akila, Adidas, Puma, The North Face + ON do their part in protecting the Earth.
Nike - ‘Move to Zero’
Nike is one of the most prominent brands that commit their brand towards making a positive impact on the environment, and these efforts are displayed through the ‘Move to Zero’ campaign. Nike has made remarkable progress in supporting sustainable production and is transparent about helping the environment. Nike prioritizes carbon, waste, water, and chemistry concepts in their products. Their sneakers, such as the Nike Space Hippie and Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next Nature, are revolutionizing eco-friendly footwear by merging sustainability and performance with their use of recycled materials like Space Waste Yarn, Nike Grin, and Flyknit.
Veja
Established in 2005, Veja is a sneaker brand that paved the way for future eco-friendly footwear brands. The brand is well-versed and committed to eco-friendly and sustainable practices. They prioritize standing with one foot in design and the other in social responsibility. They recognize that sustainability is the future and utilize fair-trade organic cotton and other sustainable materials like wild rubber that use rubber tappers to protect the Amazon forest. Veja is committed to safeguarding ecosystems and ensuring its products are not harmful to wildlife. Veja also uses recyclable packaging and its signature ChromeFree leather. The brand also manufactures and farms all of its products within the same country (Brazil) to help reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere.
Akila
Best known for its distinctive eyewear offerings, independent eyewear label Akila is also highly recognized for its sustainable and eco-friendly practices. Akila reworks traditional eyewear while making an environmentally-friendly statement with its plant-based acetate crafted from cotton and wood pulp fibers. Additionally, each pair of frames from Akila are biodegradable. The frames and packaging are also eco-friendly. To Akila, style, and sustainability can coexist in harmony.
Adidas
Regarding plastic waste, Adidas is passionate and vocal about reducing the number of plastics that go into the ocean. Because of this, in recent years, they have begun introducing various new practices and offerings that emphasize that notion. Adidas is determined to positively impact the environment by utilizing recycled plastic in several shoes, such as the Adidas Ultraboost. They take plastic that would’ve ended up in the oceans, courtesy of the non-profit environmental organization, ‘Parley for the Oceans.’ This initiative aims to create shoes using this recycled material. By next year, Adidas will strive only to use recycled polyester in its products.
Puma
Well-respected athleisure and lifestyle label Puma is also committed to sustainable practices. To Puma, they are actively working to manage their impacts and contribute to a better environment and society. All sustainability efforts by Pum are made through their ‘Forever Better’ campaign. This ongoing campaign is Puma’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact. By 2025, Puma aims to increase the proportion of more sustainable raw materials in their products. This includes sourcing 100% cotton, leather, down feathers, and cardboard from more sustainable sources. Puma’s shoes, tops, bottoms, and accessories use more sustainable materials and practices.
The North Face
In 2010, The North Face made a powerful statement and impact by increasing its focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility. They launched initiatives such as the ‘Clothes the Loop’ program, encouraging customers to recycle their old clothing. The ‘Renewed’ program also sells refurbished and repaired North Face products. Additionally, The North Face has made efforts to reduce its environmental footprint and improve supply chain sustainability efforts. The North Face recognizes the importance of protecting the outdoor spaces where outdoor sports take place. Additionally, the brand has implemented methods of using recycled materials, promoting responsible manufacturing practices, and sharing advocacy efforts and causes towards climate change, conservation, and preservation of natural resources.
ON
Technologically-advanced sneaker brand ON recognizes that the concept of engineering drives progress through a brighter future. Their three focus areas are using alternative materials, creating circular systems, and driving sustainable production. ON is starting to implement smart, high-performance materials into their footwear, such as CleanCloud. CleanCloud is made up of high-performance materials that are made from carbon emissions. As for circular systems, ON’s Cyclon silhouette is a zero-waste shoe wholly recycled and recyclable, designed to be reincarnated into new products. ON’s sustainable production is also essential to the brand, which they have done with the latest Speedboard update. They revisited this core technology to reduce waste and carbon emissions. ON went from a die-cutting production process to injection molding, which resulted in a 90% waste reduction and a 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
