Air Jordan 1 'Skyline' Release April 8th

Haven Neiman

Although it took him some convincing initially, a young Michael Jordan was hesitant when he signed with Nike. But after being convinced to join Nike as the first-ever athlete to sign with the brand, he worked closely with the Nike team to develop a sneaker that even he would want to wear on the court.

The now-retired NBA legend eventually took to the basketball court on October 18, 1984, while wearing a pair of Nike Air Ships (although they had been advertised as the then-new Air Jordan 1s, which were still in production at the time). The silhouette, predominantly cloaked with a bold red and black hue, didn’t adhere to the NBA’s uniform guidelines. He kept violating the policies and even received a stern letter from the NBA commission advising him to stop wearing these colorful sneakers. The public became immediately mesmerized by this pivotal moment, resulting in the Air Jordan 1 setting a precedent for future sneaker designs. Michael Jordan eventually developed a full-fledged brand within the Nike umbrella in 1997 and has since introduced a range of sneakers within the Jordan Brand repertoire along with countless colorways and variations.

The official Jumpman logo came onto the scene in 1988, and 2023 marks the 35th anniversary of this iconic imagery. Inspired by the original Jordan Brand photoshoot on a Chicago playground, Air Jordan now introduces the upcoming release of the Air Jordan 1 ‘Skyline.’ This premium sneaker’s story is driven by this iconic Chicago skyline and the concept of ‘beyond.’ To the Jordan Brand, the sky’s the limit, and this sneaker takes on a premium aesthetic that symbolizes the next 35 years of the Jumpman community.

The sneaker spotlights gradient hues in pink and lavender, executed throughout the mismatched textile overlays of the shoe. These overlays are contrasted by a crisp leather base, along with black accents that can be found at the signature Swoosh, high-cut collar, and interior lining. An authentic vintage finish is placed at the midsole, while a rubber outsole supports the encapsulated Air-sole cushioning at the heel. The nylon tongue is treated with a woven label, while the perforations at the toe box offer a breathable finish. The sneaker itself comes housed in a box printed with signature Nike branding and spotlighting that same Chicago skyline that is inspiring this premium sneaker.
