Air Jordan 1 'True Blue' Release January 14th

Haven Neiman

Michael Jordan completely transformed the public’s perception of him after his first year in the NBA as a rookie for the Chicago Bulls. Michael Jordan made waves in the footwear industry as the first basketball player to sign with an athleisure brand. Prior to a young Michael Jordan signing with Nike, at the time the athleisure brand was best known for its running shoes, so the idea of the brand moving into the basketball world received a lot of public criticism. After winning Rookie of the Year and becoming a powerhouse basketball player, the shoes Michael Jordan was wearing were nothing other than the iconic Air Jordan 1 sneaker.

Three years after the Air Jordan 1 made its debut, Nike introduced the third Air Jordan silhouette: the Air Jordan 3. The sneaker arrived in four original colorways: ‘White Cement,’ ‘Black Cement,’ ‘Fire Red,’ and ‘True Blue.’ The ‘True Blue’ colorway made an ever-lasting impression, having only been re-released a few more times since its initial debut. The classic colorway is highly sought-after and holds a special place in sneaker culture as a well-designed and attractive sneaker. Although Michael didn’t wear the shoes while he was with the Chicago Bulls, the sneaker did indeed get its use during his time with the Washington Wizards. Alongside Michael Jordan, even the late Kobe Bryant sported the ‘True Blue’ Air Jordan 3s during the 2003 All-Star Game.

With the anniversary of the Air Jordan 3 arriving this year in 2023, the Air Jordan 1 is honoring its successor by introducing an Air Jordan 1 ‘True Blue’ treatment. Arriving dressed in familiar hues borrowed from this OG colorway of the Air Jordan 3, the Air Jordan 1 ‘True Blue’ takes on a smooth leather upper that is contrasted by additional leather overlays and a crisp white midsole. True Blue hits can be seen at the forefoot overlay, Swoosh, and eyestay. Cement Grey can be found at the heel and collar overlay. Signature retro Jordan Wings branding is stamped at the ankle. A Nike Air tongue tag is woven into the nylon tongue. Lightweight cushioning is supported by the encapsulated Air-sole unit. The rubber cupsole wraps up the overall silhouette. Along with the sneaker itself, the shoe arrives in a fresh OG-style Nike Air shoebox that nods to the history of the ‘True Blue’ colorway.
