Air Jordan 4 Retro ‘Taupe Haze’ Releases February 27th
Chelsie Rendon
Nike and Jordan have continued their long-time relationship by providing the public exclusive and updated versions of their beloved designs. Originally released in 1989, the Air Jordan 4 was designed by Tinker Hatfield and given its price tag of $100. This price point made the AJ4 the most expensive silhouette that the brand has presented to the market at the time. Still, the general public gravitated to the shoes as they were streamlined and light-weight in comparison to previous models. Its original design utilizes mesh netting on the side panels and tongue while utilizing a unique lacing support system - providing security during times of wear. Michael Jordan was an icon and watching him play was really groundbreaking as he soared within the court. The fourth model is the first to introduce the ‘Flight’ concept within its logo - as it refers to Jordan’s athleticism and embodiment within the court.
The sneaker gained momentum as it was showcased in the Spike Lee movie, ‘Do the Right Thing’ and worn by Michel Jordan during his game-winning shot against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1989 playoffs. While championing the Air Jordan 4’s, Michael Jordan also led the Bulls to their first Eastern Conference Finals and performed exceptionally as he achieved his overall best statistical season. It is no surprise that this particular silhouette gathered so much attention, making it highly sought-after.
In 1999, Jordan Brand reintroduced the sneaker providing its Retro version that is more popular in comparison to its predecessor. This version elevates the initial mesh panels with a full leather upper. All Nike logos are omitted and instead are given Jordan motifs, significant and highly-desired by sneaker enthusiasts. The first Air Jordan 4 Retro in the 2021 repertoire will be nicknamed ‘Taupe Haze’ as the new color combination utilizes mute and vibrant hues, creating a palette perfect for the current trends.
The earth-toned edition of the Air Jordan sees a premium construction of suede fabrications within its uppers in comparison to the leather materials commonly seen. Its durable composition is met with a molded TPU support strap and lace eyestays providing all-day security. Nike’s exposed Air cushioning is implemented within the heel and forefoot providing responsiveness with each step. Within its design, signature Jumpman branding can be seen on the heel and tongue as it stands out in the ‘Infrared’ colorway - accenting the neutral tones. Additional detailing can be seen within the forefoot, midfoot, and tongue where an exposed cracked panel is highlighted contributing to the sneaker’s textured suede design. ‘Taupe Haze’ is partnered with the ‘Oil Grey’ hue giving the sneaker a color combination reminiscent of the Mythical Friends & Family pair put forth with Travis Scott. Due to its historical background and desired colorway, the Air Jordan 4 Retro ‘Taupe Haze’ will be feverishly coveted by fashion and sneaker enthusiasts worldwide.
