‘Shattered Backboard’
After his Rookie of the Year NBA Season in 1985, Michael Jordan suited up in a black and orange jersey to play in an exhibition game in Italy. There, he scored 30 points and subsequently shattered the backboard of the hoop after a powerful dunk. Drawing inspiration from that infamous moment, in 2015, the Jordan brand released their first-ever Air Jordan 1 Retro model titled ‘Shattered Backboard.’ The sneaker mimicked the Black Toe Jordan 1 in terms of its silhouette and additional details. Still, the difference was that hues of orange and black were displayed throughout the profile, replacing the red and the white toebox. Over the years, Air Jordan Retro ‘Shattered Backboard’ colorways have remained similar, including its leather upper, perforated toebox, embroidered Nike swoosh, and signature Nike branding on the tongue.
When the pair were first released in 2015, the model was surprisingly not very popular, resulting in many shoe collectors passing on securing a pair. But over time, hype began to rally behind what we now consider one of the most iconic sneaker models of all time. It continues to be one of the most sought-after and non-original colorways in the entire Jordan line. For the past six years, each pair’s release stayed relatively the same in its silhouette and colorway. The classic stitched detailing and the orange outsole have remained, including the signature Jumpman branding and high-top finishings. A year after the sneaker’s initial debut, the Jordan Brand introduced the same concept-style design with the ‘Reverse Shattered Backboard’ Jordan 1. This silhouette reverses the color blocking of the black and orange leather panels. To this day, the specific colorway is also considered to be one of the most sought-out of all the Jordans.
In contrast to previous versions, with Jordan’s most recent release, the Air Jordan 5 Retro ‘Shattered Backboard’ presents a similar palette on a newly-designed structure. The upper is constructed of white leather with a mesh collar and quarter panel. This newly-designed mesh replaces the model’s typical plastic netting. With a matte silver tongue, the adorned orange Jumpman resides. The upgraded midsole features orange polyurethane, complete with a visible Air-sole unit in the heel. The sneakers are finished with gray speckled spikes adjacent to the milk outsole, representing Jordan’s career’s iconic ‘Shattered Backboard’ moment.
