Cult streetwear brand Mastermind was first brought onto the scene by founder and designer Masaaki Homma in 1997. With no formal design training, Masaaki Homma’s fashion concept was officially launched during Tokyo’s annual Fashion Week. Mastermind embodies mysterious and darker aesthetics and is proudly recognized by its iconic skull and crossbones logo, drafted more than 1,000 times by Masaaki Homma himself. The plan was to design a skull with a positive meaning, combining concepts of perfectionism with poeticism. In 2017, Masaaki Homma returned to fashion after a five-year break to introduce two separate sub-labels of Mastermind—Mastermind WORLD and Mastermind JAPAN. 

Mastermind JAPAN caters to the domestic market, while Mastermind WORLD caters to the global one. Both labels take on a grunge approach that has since created a cult-like following that has become heavily invested and loyal to the brands. By combining luxurious aesthetics with streetwear designs on apparel like tees, hoodies, crewnecks, pants, and more, Mastermind JAPAN and Mastermind WORLD’s detailed designs make up each season’s deliveries. With that being said, the brands’ latest apparel deliveries include a handful of stand-out pieces that are essential for any grunge streetwear collection. Mastermind World SH021 Woven Shirt

One of the first apparel offerings featured in the Mastermind WORLD delivery is the SH021 Woven Shirt. This premium design references Masaaki Homma’s careful attention to detail, as the silhouette spotlights elevated grunge aesthetics paired with luxurious detailing. A full front button closure is placed at the exterior, leading to a spread collar that offers a dimensional aspect to the silhouette. A patch pocket also makes an appearance at the front, which provides a functional touch to the overall luxurious piece of clothing. The vented side seams are placed for added breathability while also contributing to dimensional aspects that coincide with the design’s overall aesthetic. Screen-printed branding and signature skull and crossbones graphics are placed throughout the entirety of the design, which complements the rest of the look.

Mastermind Japan SW033 Sweatshirt

Mastermind JAPAN’S unique grunge aesthetics take center stage on the design’s next stand-out apparel item—the SW033 Sweatshirt. The premium design is composed entirely of cotton, resulting in a breathable yet functional aesthetic. The elevated silhouette incorporates a drawcord hood along with ribbed detailing at the cuffs and hem for additional detailing. Gold-foil printed branding resides at the rear, while the screen-printed skull and crossbones motif resides at the back for additional spotlighting. The kangaroo pocket at the front contributes to a functional finish.

Mastermind World SH014 Woven Shirt

The Mastermind World SH014 Woven Shirt is a must-have within any grunge apparel collection. This premium design is included in the luxury label’s latest delivery and spotlights a comfortable yet breathable cotton blend. The snap button-up design leads to a distinguishing pointed collar paired with barrel cuffs. Embroidered branding resides at the left cuff, while additional embroidered detailing statements are at the chest. The all-over plaid print ties together the rest of the look.
