WTF! Happened: Gang Starr

4

MC Guru and DJ Premier made up the East Coast duo Gang Star. The two have become influential to the hip hop scene in the 90's and have open doors for future artists who are in the hip hop scene. Founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1985, Gang Starr consisted of a number of members which soon left the group leaving Guru the only member left. After connecting with DJ Premier in Houston through a demo tape, Guru was sold and had Premier join the group. In 1989, the hip hop duo released the single "Words I Manifest" along with their first debut album No More Mr. Nice Guy.

After being signed to Chrysalis, the London based label has helped Gang Starr reach the heights they are known for today. Through their worldwide commercial success, together they have established the New York Hardcore Hip Hop Sound. Step in the Arena, Daily Operation, Hard to Earn and Moment of Truth are albums that are respectied in the underground hip hop scene. In 2006, Premier indicated that Gang Starr was no more. In 2010, Guru suffered a heart attack and died later that year.

The foundation that Gang Star created have planted roots in the New York scene even though both were not New York natives. Although Gang Starr is no longer active, they will always be a staple to the hip hop community.
