‘Red Thunder’

First released in 1989, the Air Jordan 4 was crafted by iconic sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield. Intending to top the Air Jordan 3, Hatfield wanted to get further into designing a more ‘performance-like’ sneaker. The Air Jordan 4’s design is comparable to its previous version. Still, some alterations were made, such as its prominent over-molded mesh along with customizable laces that allow you to lace your sneakers in whichever way you choose. Many elements were kept the same, but additional features included a new material called Durabuck, synthetic leather. This more breathable design incorporated a new Nike Air logo featured at the heel and a signature Jumpman at the tongue. An encapsulated Air unit is placed at the forefoot, opting for a more technical approach to the sneaker.

The first Air Jordan 4 debuted during the NBA All-Star Game in February of 1989 by Michael Jordan, where he sported the iconic ‘Black Cement’ and ‘White Cement’ colorways. That same year, Nike began releasing commercials featuring Jordan and Spike Lee and ads promoting the sneaker in Sports Illustrated. During the 1989 NBA Playoffs, one of Jordan’s most iconic basketball performances, he scored 44 points and won the game with ‘The Shot,’ which won him and his team the series. He was wearing his ‘Black Cement’ Air Force 4’s during this game, further spotlighting this new sneaker.

The latest addition to the Air Jordan 4 legacy is the Air Jordan 4 Retro ‘Red Thunder.’ Introduced in family sizing, this sleek design features a Black nubuck construction that comprises most of the upper. Tonal detailing can be seen at the ankle wings, upper tongue, inner liner, as well as the plastic heel tabs. A bold Red hue appears at the waffle eyelets and the mesh detailing placed at the tongues, side panels, and midsoles. For a bold statement, Jumpmans at the tongue and heel catch your eye, while further Jordan Flight branding emphasizes the silhouette’s heritage. The distinct Black rubber outsole ties the design together and enhances its durability and traction.
