First introduced in 1987, the Nike Air Max 1 silhouette introduced the birth of the Air Max lineage. What began as an experiment in cushioning soon evolved into a legendary footwear icon. The Air Max 1 remains a reimagined and retooled silhouette, but its heritage remains intact. Designed by a then freshly-graduated University of Oregon architecture student Tinker Hatfield, the shoe’s legendary Air technology can be attributed to former NASA aeronautical engineer Frank Rudy.
The Air Max 1 sits between all facets of entertainment while continuing to identify moments in culture. It keeps its technology relevant with its exposed Air Max cushioning while remaining a pillar in sneaker culture. The Air Max 1 marked the first of the remaining Air Max lineage descendants and remained one of the most iconic and notable sneaker models.
With that, Nike is launching the Nike Air Max 1 '87 Women's 'Great Outdoors' this Wednesday, March 15th. Taking on a blend of bold prints and textures at the upper, the statement-making sneaker is inspired by the inside of a sneaker boutique. The design nods to sophisticated upholstery and area rugs with its mixed-material upper. The velvet lace-up closure secures the design, while the silk lining and printed Nike branding make an impression. The exposed Air Max unit resides at the heel, while the icy blue rubber outsole underneath secures the look.
