Nike Air Max 1 'Escape' Release May 25th
The imitable Nike Air Max 1 debuted in 1987 thanks to a young Tinker Hatfield, who had recently graduated from the University of Oregon as an architecture student. Nike hired the young designer to make something out of this technology they were referring to as ‘Air.’ Sneaker culture can thank the invention of this revolutionary technology to former NASA aeronautical engineer Frank Rudy. This cushioning experiment eventually evolved into what we know today as the Air Max 1. The iconic silhouette remains true to its original form but, over the years, has received countless iterations and reimagined touches. While sitting between all facets of entertainment and fashion, the design keeps its technology relevant while remaining a pillar in sneaker culture.
Marked as the first of what would become a legendary footwear line in the Nike umbrella, the Nike Air Max 1 now receives its latest iteration—’Escape.’ Inspired by Nike’s long-running record of trail running and pushing boundaries in the sneaker industry, this new sneaker is a can’t miss.
The Nike Escape debuted in 1984, paving the way for future runners. This new Air Max 1 iteration celebrates this history by pairing classic running DNA with Pacific Northwest-inspired details (nodding to Nike’s Oregon origins). The colors of the shoe were pulled from an iconic Nike running ad, precisely one where Mount St. Helens’ caldera was billowing in the background. An embroidered forest scene on the heel adds further spotlighting, while the rugged suede accents, delicate textile, and boot-inspired laces secure the design. Additional stand-out attributes include the blend of suede, leather, and mesh in the upper, along with a signature Max Air unit supported by a rubber outsole for a finishing touch.
