‘Blueprint’

Nike’s revolutionary Air technology is thanks to aeronautical engineer Franky Rudy, who introduced his invention to Nike co-founder Phil Knight in the early 80s. Fast forward to a few years latest when now-legendary sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield was tasked with his first sneaker assignment from Nike. Hatfield had just graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Architecture. His mission in this specific venture was to implement Rudy’s revolutionary Air technology within a sleek sneaker. Inspired by the outward-facing exterior of the famous art museum Centre Pompidou in Paris, France, Hatfield decided to make a sneaker that included a ‘window’ at the midsole where everyone could see into what would be an iconic cushioning system. Once complete, the sneaker was given the name of the ‘Air Max.’

The Nike Air Max’s legacy has been nothing short of impactful since its over 35 years of implementation in sneaker culture. The Nike Air Max became the standard for cushioning and transcended footwear as we knew it and has quickly developed a loyal fan base, with new styles and shapes introduced over the years. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the sneaker and its original design, the Air Max 1 crafted by none other than Tinker Hatfield, Nike introduces the release of the Nike Air Max 1 Premium ‘Blueprint,’ releasing on Nike Air Max Day, Saturday, March 26th.

Nike’s notable community efforts are prevalent in the Air Max 1 Premium ‘Blueprint.’ Inspired by communities charting a path for the future, the Air Max 1 Premium ‘Blueprint’ is youthful and irreverent while embodying the creative spirits represent the Air Force 1’s values. Placed on the classic and iconic Air Max 1 silhouette, ‘Blueprint’ incorporates a breathable mesh with premium leather overlays. Visible Nike branding appears at the clear TPU tongue, while a subtle embroidered Swoosh appears within the side of the toe box. Textured Swooshes are placed while boasting a gridded blueprint finish that aligns with similar imagery at the aforementioned clear TPU tongue. Classic blueprint and technical drawings are juxtaposed over a globe, map of the USA, and the state of Oregon (a nod to their founders + headquarters).

This imagery signifies the Air Max 1’s notable trajectory and journey. The phrasing “Designed in 1987 in Beaverton, OR” and “Created for the Future of Sport “ are placed at the breathable removable insoles.” The tips of the laces are presented with Air Max Dy (3.26) insignia, while the glow-in-the-dark rubber outsole underneath makes a bold statement.
