Nike Dunk Low ‘Coast’ Releases February 18th

Chelsie Rendon

Nike has a full lineup of releases this year and they started out strong with the introduction of anticipated colorways and silhouettes. To keep the anticipation high, Nike has been releasing never before seen color ways within traditional models. Launched in 2002, the Dunk Low is given its latest color combination that displays the coastal blues with traditional gold hues. Nicknamed ‘Coast’ the latest reiteration of the Dunk Low will be making its first appearance within the month of February.

Initially designed as a skateboarding shoe, the Dunk Low received incredible feedback as it was a rendered version of its high top counterpart. Within 2002, the skateboarding scene was rising in popularity and to tap into this sport, Nike created a team of all-star skaters to champion the Swoosh. The most iconic skaters that were a part of this team were Paul Rodriguez and Brian Anderson. They were able to model the Dunk within competitions and videos making it grow within the skate community and eventually within fashion. Even if you weren’t a skater the Dunk’s exaggerated take on what seemed like an Air Force was positively accepted within footwear and fashion. During this time it was common to see oversized apparel and exaggerated accessories therefore the Dunk really made strides and overtime became one of the most sought after models. Upon its original release many of the notable color ways were introduced including the Denim Dunk Low. Because of its younger and experiential market, Nike was able to play with design and try new things which contributed to its popularity.

The latest effort from Nike utilizes all of the traditional materials and designs from its predecessors. The Dunk Low ‘Coast’ truly reminds you of the coastal waters as its leather overlays are embodied by the pigmented blue. To balance it out we see a white leather upper and University Gold detailing within the tongue and heel. Signature designs are seen within its composition including its traditional perforated holes and Swoosh emblem. The design can be easily referred to as the UCLA inspired Dunks as Nike has a long relationship within many universities. It’s not uncommon to see Nike pair up with colleges as they like to pay tribute with a particular collection known as “Be True To Your School.”
