Nike Dunk Low SP ‘City Market’ Releases on March 4th

Chelsie Rendon

When the Nike Dunk was introduced to the general public in 2002, its initial purpose was for skateboarding. Its padded collar and tongue, thick rubber heel, and Air cushioning were easily adopted into the skate community as it was comfortable, long-lasting, and a complete fashion statement. The designs that came along with the model provided a diverse range of styles that weren’t only enjoyed by skaters but also everyone else. Others gravitated towards the unique colorways and fabrics; the eccentric combinations led to nicknames for each model making them feel even more exclusive than they already were. Knowing the sneaker’s background the shoe is given its latest nickname ‘City Market’ as Nike pays homage to urban markets commonly seen within cities. The sneaker’s design commemorates reusable materials, Nike’s history, and communities that work and support local markets.

The Nike Dunk Low SP ‘City Market’ is constructed with varying patterns for a bold and vibrant statement. Stitched together, we find durable materials familiar to coffee and rice bags used within delivering of products. The textures are decorated with Blue Ribbon Sports memorabilia and patterns as the shoe also pays tribute to the label’s roots and material development within their history. The padded tongue is given a zippered detail as it reverts to reusable grocery bags obtained from stores in order to reduce our green footprint. Along with the zipper, a re-imagined nutritional fact label fits Nike’s aesthetic with exclusive branding.

In addition to the textured upper, burlap rope replaces traditional cotton laces complementing the marketplace design. Noticeable attributes included in the sneaker’s design can be seen within the transparent Nike motifs upon the heel and side panels. Nike Air technology is implemented within the insoles providing a fashionable shoe comfort as well: we can also find exclusive branding made particularly for the shoe reading, ‘Thank You for Caring.’ This saying can also be seen within a reusable bag that accompanies each pair. The shoe will become available on March 4th in both adult and toddler sizing.
