Nike x Fragment Design Dunk High ‘Beijing’ Release June 5th
Hiroshi Fujiwara has made an impact within the fashion industry as he bridged the gap between Tokyo and the West. His unique outlook and styles were favored in the early 90s making him a spectacle and influencer before the word even existed. His distinct taste of combining street styles with high-fashion made Tokyo a destination and elevating its status within the fashion industry. Since then, Fujiwara has become a prominent name in Japan and is commonly referred to as the ‘Godfather of Harajuku’ or ‘Godfather of Streetwear’ as he created a pivotal moment within Japan’s fashion history. Over time he has developed his own labels including the coveted Fragment Design which saw collaborations with Levi, Supreme, Stussy, and Nike.
This spring, Fragment Designs has teamed up with Nike once again to re-issue their beloved ‘City Pack’ that was originally released in 2010. Shining a light on 3 popular cities, the ‘London,’ ‘Beijing,’ and ‘New York,’ were introduced upon a classic Nike Dunk High with mismatch color blocking throughout. The London sneaker saw a pink and yellow palette whereas New York and Beijing were designed with a neutral base and pops of color. When the sneakers were originally announced many were excited for the sneakers as two prolific names have come together to introduce an exclusive design. Each sneaker was embossed with the iconic lightning bolt at the heel making them even more sought-after. 11 years later, Nike and Fragment Design have come together once more to reissue a rendition of the ‘Beijing.’
The special reissue takes on familiar cues with two distinct differences compared to the original. The biggest difference being its matching design. Unlike the original, we don’t see inverted colors- instead they are identical and follow the same tones. The signature lightning bolt is still prevalent upon the heel but new branding is also printed on the rubber outsole commemorating the partnership. This small touch reverts to Fujiwara’s special aesthetic. The sneaker is designed with a complete leather base and a classic perforated toe box for breathability. Many have been anticipating the next collaboration between the two and now that it is announced many are hoping to obtain a pair during this release. Original sneakers from 2010 have increased in value highlighting the significance and exclusiveness of Nike and Fragment Design’s sneaker projects. With this initial drop, it is rumored that upcoming renditions of the two other sneakers are on their way as well.
