Nike x Gyakusou Collection

Nike and UNDERCOVER’s Jun Takahashi has had a long-lived relationship and this July the partnership prevails as they have come together once again to release a collection dedicated to Takahashi’s love for running. First introduced in 2010, Nike approached Jun on a collaborative project that diverged from the traditional streetwear aesthetic commonly seen within UNDERCOVER’s repertoire, and instead delve into Jun’s fixation with running. When Jun took on the project, he decided to create its own category and called it Gyakusou. This word has a specific meaning to the Japanese designer as it referenced clockwise running in Tokyo parks versus other parts of the world. ‘Gyaku’ is translated as wrong way or reverse whereas ‘sou’ means running or run, a play on words that combines his heritage and love for running. So when Nike approached him, he jumped on the opportunity and tested his skills in sportswear.

When the collection first made its debut, Jun and Nike had a clear objective of creating running gear that isn’t only effective for the sport but also feels natural and functional. As an avid runner, he wanted to make sure there were tactical details with sleek finishes- creating the perfect blend between sportswear and casual fits. The duo has come together again to release an exclusive collection that diverges from traditional tonal palettes. The latest collection includes footwear and clothing that takes on Pantone color blocking for a bold and vibrant touch. Two colorways of the famed ZoomX VaporFly NEXT% make their debut along with apparel that follow similar trends. Inspired by the fiery spirit of Nike’s original runners, the Utility shorts make an introduction in both men’s and women’s sizing. Its sweat-wicking constructions offer a comfortable fit while zippered pockets and an elastic fabric provide functionality during wear times. A similar construction is designed within the Cap and Ankle Socks as they take into consideration the style of an avid runner. Enhancing breathability and comfort, the Cap is designed with perforated details while the socks feature midfoot cushioning with each step. 

To coincide with the apparel, the latest rendition of the VaporFly NEXT% makes its debut within the collection. Its utilitarian design is emphasized with a range of textiles highlighted on the upper. Both synthetic and mesh fabrics work in tandem along the upper for a conforming yet breathable experience during times of wear. The base is decorated by upfront branding that reverts to UNDERCOVER LAB’s aesthetic. This branding stands out as the rubber outsoles are dressed in a dark coloring that emphasizes its long-lasting build. Nike’s distinct ZoomX technology is incorporated throughout the midsole for a propelling experience with each step. Highly desired by passionate runners, the sneaker is a must-have as it perfectly blends street style with sportswear. Fans of Jun Takahashi and UNDERCOVER are anticipating the latest collection with Nike, making it a coveted style this season.
