An Expressive Capsule. Vans x MoMA Release 11/11
Ernie Salvatera
Vans and Museum of Modern Art work together for a capsule that highlights the works of iconic artists. With an aspiration to “share a passion for inspiring creative expression and individuality around the world,” the creatives at MoMA look to express the works and ideologies of these artists through fashion.
Right off the trails of their first wave of releases, Vans and MoMA release the expressive second wave of this collaborative collection. The artists highlighted this time around are Edvard Munch, Jackson Pollock, and Faith Ringgold. Each artist is monumental & impactful in their own right, and some of their fabled pieces and designs equip Vans’ apparel in footwear for an almost museum-like display on your wardrobe.
Known for his iconic The Scream (1895) painting, Edvard Munch’s work is donned across one of Van’s staple silhouettes, the Era. Dressed in an all-over print, the Vans x MoMA Era by Edvard Munch has a canvas-dressed upper and is the perfect ‘canvas’ for his art’s black and white color blocking. There’s also a shirt to accommodate this release with the same ‘screaming man’ motif on the left breast and backside of the shirt.
Jackson Pollock also makes a splash with this abstract painting style. His One: Number 31 piece from 1950 also gets a footwear canvas on the Vans Authentic model. His signature artwork dresses the whole upper of the shoe and even transcends down to the midsole creating a unified piece of work. Not limited to the Authentic model, the same splatter print can be found on a Vans x MoMA Jackson Pollock Shirt in Black.
