An In-Depth Look: Union x Air Jordan 1 KO Low

Haven Neiman

Considered to be a pioneer in the world of streetwear, Union prioritizes walking the line of fashion and function. Their offerings take on fashionable, functional, yet elevated aesthetics. Union initially started by spotlighting up-and-coming designers but has since grown to become one of the most revered stores in the industry.

First opening its doors in Soho, New York, in 1989, Union’s Los Angeles location opened its doors just a few years later by former New York employee Chris Gibbs. His story started when he moved to New York for school, and in 1996 began working at the Union’s New York location up until the spot closed down in 2009. He was offered to buy the Los Angeles location, and this decision has since grown into a 30-year fashion legacy. A critical component of Union is its great history of sneaker collaborations with brands like Stüssy, Undefeated, Huf, Size?, and more. But perhaps the most attention-grabbing collaborations have been with Nike and Jordan. It all started in 2005 with the coveted ‘Clerks Pack’ of Nike Air Force 180s. Since then, ongoing sneaker collaborations have occurred with Nike and Air Jordan, with some of the most iconic collaborative silhouettes being introduced.

"IT COULD BE SO SIMPLE."

Some of these include the Union x Air Jordan 4 ‘Retro Off-Noir,’ ‘Union x Air Jordan SP Grey Fog,’ ‘Union x Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG Storm Blue,’ and ‘Union x Nike Dunk Low Blue.’ In 2022, Union’s collaborations prioritized Nike silhouettes such as the Nike Dunk and Nike Cortez. This year, Union is starting strong by introducing the first-ever low cut version of the Air Jordan 1 KO. The Union x Air Jordan 1 KO Low remains loyal to its minimal roots with an all-white cotton canvas upper. The entirety of the silhouette is secured by cotton twill binding tape at the seams. The exposed foam tongue presents a blend of half canvas and half suede. The back tab of the shoe spotlights the signature AJKO ‘Wings’ logo, while the interchangeable velcro Swooshes are presented in Light Grey and Carolina Blue hues, nodding to Michael Jordan’s collegiate legacy at the University of North Carolina.

"A NOT SO DISRUPTIVE SHOE FOR THE DISRUPTIVE INDIVIDUAL."

The midsole of the Union x Air Jordan 1 KO Low arrives in a Cream hue, while the outer rubber sole distinguishes itself subtly with a Light Grey aesthetic. The interchangeable Swooshes come in a thick, smooth suede material. Minor ‘UN/LA’ branding elements can be found at the side profile, while the same swooshes reveal repeated ‘UN/LA’ branding underneath. Embroidered yellow stitching can be found at the sides, while the sneaker itself is housed in a special co-branded box with collaborative branding and a unique oversized gold chain graphic.
