Adi Dassler pursued a footwear career with a passion to provide the best possible silhouettes for athletes and sneaker enthusiasts alike. The introduction of Adidas in 1949 made this dream a reality, allowing Dassler to start his journey which would lead him into unknown territories. With the intent to provide for a variety of sports teams, Dassler could only hope for his big break, and eventually, it would come 5 years later. When the German national football team won the 1954 World Cup wearing Dassler’s sneakers, the world truly saw the potential Adidas offered. Since then, the powerhouse has been revolutionizing footwear for athletes as it was important to modify current models and modify them to the market’s need. Adidas continues to produce top-quality designs and works towards implementing new technology that upgrades the traditional sneaker. One of the most popular being the Ultra Boost. Now being one of the top-performing sneakers for Adidas, it didn’t become an instant success but instead, Adidas continuously improved until it offered exactly what everyone needed.
THE INTRODUCTION OF BOOST
To stay on top of the evolving trends, the introduction of footwear technology became increasingly popular as markets demanded the best and most comfortable designs. Competing against Nike’s Air technology, Adidas knew they needed to provide something just as responsive. Since the early 90s, they have implemented quality technologies including the iconic Torsion System in 1989. Still used today the Torsion System stabilizes the foot while offering lightweight arch support and a free-moving forefoot. Its instant success set the bar high as many athletes enjoyed its adaptability and responsiveness. In an attempt to keep innovating, Adidas would later include ClimaCool and adizero to their repertoire. But it was until 2013 when they realized a buzz started forming on their latest innovation.
Initially made for runners, Adidas introduced the latest invention titled Energy Boost. This midsole promised 20% more of an energy return compared to the standard EVA rubber, which truly made people impressed as many craved the extra bounce within their step. It experienced a slow start during its first year, but in the years to come, it would only grow more. Dennis Kimetto would make headlines in 2014 as he completed the Berlin Marathon in record time in the infamous adiZero Adios Boost sneakers. This image would scour the world, making runners and athletes interested in the iconic coral-colored running shoes. Seeing its potential, Adidas would then introduce the Pure Boost the very first silhouette completely constructed with a Boost midsole. Moving forward, Boost would become a very popular midsole as many sneakers would champion its cushioning. The classic NMD utilizes this form along with the James Harden basketball shoes and Kanye Wests’ famed Yeezy footwear line with Adidas. This was just the beginning for Boost technology and in 2015 Adidas would introduce the ultimate midsole that we know today.
Adidas unveiled the legendary Ultra Boost; a technology that brought three pinnacles into one. The combination of Primeknit, Torsion, and Boost makes up the Ultra Boost which offered optimal breathability, stability, and cushioning. Marketed towards runners, the sneaker was a paradise as it provided everything an athlete could want in a shoe. Along with the signature Boost, the sneaker also debuted a complete Primeknit upper reminiscent of a sock. This design started a revolution for Adidas as the runner became more than just a performance shoe, but also a lifestyle sneaker. Everyone wanted a piece of the Ultra Boost especially after Kanye West championed the ‘Triple White’ silhouette during his 2015 concerts. This evolved the sneaker, showing the world it was more than just an athletic shoe but is applicable to everyday wear- in particular, streetwear.
The most popular colorways include the monochromatic hues; ‘Core Black,’ ‘Cream Chalk,’ ‘Dark Mocha,’ and ‘Triple Black’ just to name a few. Adidas continues to produce new iterations as the design only continues to grow with time. For the month of May, Adidas draws emphasis to the original UltraBoost as three new colorways make their debut. Utilizing its first-ever form, the UltraBoost is met with bright colors perfect for the spring and summer seasons. Hues including ‘Light Aqua,’ ‘EQT Green,’ and ‘Bahmin’ are implemented within the blueprints for unique combinations never before seen on the UB silhouette. Each sneaker is designed with a Primeknit upper and met with synthetic overlays which highlight Adidas’ signature three-stripe motif. The iconic UltraBoost heel clip highlights the name while adding a contrasting element to the bright colors. Dubbed Adidas ‘most comfortable sneaker,’ the latest Ultra Boost is set to release May 7th.
