‘Heavy’

Shortly after aeronautical engineer Frank Rudy’s revolutionary ‘air technology’ landed on the desk of Nike co-founder Phil Knight, the iconic sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield took over. He was tasked with crafting a sneaker that implemented this new air technology. Inspired by the outward-facing exterior of the famous art museum Centre Pompidou in Paris, France, Hatfield decided to make a sneaker that included a ‘window’ at the midsole, where everyone could see into what would be an iconic cushioning system that sets a precedent for future designs, such as the first-ever Nike Air Max introduced in 1987.

The Nike Air Max has changed the game for future sneakers. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of this iconic sneaker and to honor the original Air Max 1, Concepts and Nike have joined together to introduce the release of the Air Max 1 SP ‘Heavy.’ Inspired by the ‘60s and ‘70s music festival season, this new iteration of the legendary Air Max sneaker embodies wild and loud patterns mashed together while maintaining its classic Nike Air Max 1 silhouette. The different shades of denim are meant to present the deconstructed aesthetic of jeans worn by festival-goers, while the subtle hits of cowhide symbolize the cows foaming the grounds of the iconic music festival hosted on a farm in Bethel, New York, during the ‘60s and ‘70s.

All while embodying radical youth expression, the Nike x Concepts Air Max 1 SP ‘Heavy’ features a unique mix of materials, such as denim, tiger camo, leather, and corduroy placed within the upper. This distinct combination juxtaposes with the corduroy material placed at the collar. Additional patterned elements of bandana, cowhide, and woven fabric appear within the panels, while the guitar pick hanging and loose thread embroidery make a bold statement. The ‘mud’ speckled midsole puts a free-spirited approach to each step while symbolizing the unpredictability of weather during music festivals. The visible Air cushioning adds an optimal comfort level along with the padded and low-cut collar. This durable sneaker is tied together and completed with the rubber outsole.
