Rei Kawakubo’s defying outlook on fashion has made her an icon within the industry. Initially starting Comme des Garçons as a passion project, she wanted to reinvent typical standards and give women clothes that are comfortable and high quality. Named after the French saying ‘like boys,’ Comme des Garçons has grown into subcategories covering all styles. Comme des Garçons SHIRT, Comme des Garçons HOMME, and Comme des Garçons PLAY, being some of the most notable labels. In each line that Kawakubo produces, she explores unique designs which include statement pieces and ready-to-wear staples. The PLAY category tends to speak to all aesthetics as its premium designs are made for everyday wear and draw emphasis on the beloved heart and eye emblem.  

Created by New York artist Filip Pagowski, the logo was originally developed for another project but Kawakubo decided to omit the emblem and go with another figure. Later on, she would dive into Pagowski’s archives and bring the character back to life; finding its place within the PLAY line. The heart eyes would be seen on a collaborative collection with North Face and a footwear project with Converse. Many might not know the name, but the illustration speaks for itself as sneaker connoisseurs would make the Comme des Garçons x Converse sneaker one of the most iconic staples within footwear history. 

Comme des Garçons PLAY doesn’t release collections correlating to the seasons, instead, they take an unconventional approach that introduces a variety of pieces that can be layered or styled as a focal point.
