Helmut Lang Summer ‘22
Haven Neiman
The concept of minimalist fashion can be accredited to none other than Helmut Lang. Established by Austrian fashion designer Helmut Lang in 1986, the namesake label’s designer was a pioneer in the fashion industry by being one of the first to merge streetwear style with fashion. Born in Austria in 1956, the self-taught designer began designing in his hometown of Vienna in 1977. Considered to be one of the most influential designers of the past few decades, his legacy is still prevalent in current fashion trends and runways. By focusing on premium clean lines and materials, the avant-garde label is best known for its tailored garments such as flat-front pants and low-rise jeans. In 2017, the label did a relaunch and went back to its original logo all while reintroducing ‘Helmut Lang Re-Edition,’ where they showcased their past staple pieces. By pioneering minimalism in the ‘90s with his sharp-cut tailoring and androgynous, utilitarian pieces, his aesthetic and influence can be seen trickled down into fashion today.
