PUMA Suede Vintage Made in Japan Release January 14th

Chelsie Rendon

Puma has grown into a company that has transformed the sneaker industry, progressing to surpass the boundaries and creating the latest sneaker technology.  Streetwear, sports, and casual fashion all have a place within PUMA’s repertoire and their collections are only growing. After 73 years, PUMA has released a new rendition of their most iconic silhouette, the Puma Suede.

In 1968, the Puma Suede made its first appearance during the Olympics that took place in Mexico. Puma supplied these sneakers to the US track and field team’s men and women to wear during their experience. Here, the sneaker was dubbed “The Crack” - slang referring to outstanding sportsmanship. During this event, athletes were given blue or white versions of the shoes. But Tommie Smith obtained a black and white version, thus becoming the most popular colorway for the sneaker. From that moment on, the shoe has been seen throughout many communities, from basketball to hip hop, and has become PUMA’s most successful and remembered sneaker of all time.

To commemorate its history, PUMA has dedicated its latest sneaker by fine-tuning the original Puma Suede. The Made In Japan version sees all the original details with small variations adding a high-grade and luxurious outcome.

One high-end attribute is the use of leather emphasized throughout the silhouette. The Suede Vintage Made in Japan features metallic leather form stripes against the lateral sides, standing out against the suede base. Matching synthetic leather lining can be found within the sneaker, creating a form-fitted look compared to the fabric lining in the Suede Core model.

The Made in Japan version also replaced the original PUMA Suede Logo with a silver foil PUMA No. 2 Logo. The shoe is well-recognized worldwide; therefore, the silhouette highlights the shoe’s make instead. The latest version also sees a shorter vamp in comparison to the USA Made design. While the tongue is constructed with a thin and raw edge design, creating a modern and sleek style compared to the original Suede Core, which is met with a stitch and turn tongue.

Another feature includes the use of premium suede amongst the upper and tongue - the original model provides a classic suede as the base. Utilizing high-quality fabric adds to the sneaker’s craftsmanship creating a luxurious touch and elevated construction.

The PUMA Suede Made in Japan embodies all the original details with a modern take - they are truly creating classics for all times.
