Angelo Baque’s Awake NY | Spring ‘21 Collection Available Now

Chelsie Rendon

Raised in Richmond Hill, Queens, Angelo Baque remembers going to streetwear shops in lower Manhattan and developing a love for clothing. While working at Stussy, he met Supreme founder and owner, James Jebbia; they connected instantly and Jebbia offered him a position that eventually led him to build the brand we know today. Baque is well known for his tenure with Supreme; elevating its social status within the world of fashion and after 10 years of growing Supreme’s repertoire, it was time for Baque to venture and focus on his personal project. Awake NY launched in 2012 and in 2017 he stepped down as brand director of Supreme, to focus on building his brand. Diverging from standard streetwear themes, the label is a movement and encapsulates New York’s forever-changing aesthetic.

A graduate from the School of Visual Arts, Baque’s Latin heritage helps him defy the standards of fashion and introduce unique collections that grasp inspiration from skate and city cultures. His attention to detail and particular taste in fabrication has grown over time, helping him develop the unique aesthetic seen within Awake NY’s deliveries. The use of bold patterns and colors are implemented into essential closet staples. Since its inception, Awake NY has worked on many projects with brands including Reebok, Dover Street Market, BornxRaised, Asics, and Levi.

Recently, Awake NY introduced its Spring ‘21 collection; a capsule that draws inspiration from vintage collegiate gear. Transferred across varying pieces, the delivery reinterprets the brand’s logo to fit within the new graphics and garments. Cross-seasonal apparel also makes an introduction for long-lasting items that can be worn all year long.

A range of graphic tees makes an appearance within the collection- all referencing signature branding in varying ways. The more classic approach is seen upon the Logo Tee in a wide range of colors. A more unconventional and whimsical design is seen on the Orca Tee and the Lychee Logo Tee as they combine natural aesthetics with vibrancy. This theme is translated over into their Bloom Logo L/S Tee. Made with quality cotton, the long sleeve is designed with bold florals reminiscent of the spring season.

Some other stand-out pieces include the iconic Chenille Patches Varsity Jacket. Introduced in two colorways, the jacket embodies premium qualities with its wool base and leather sleeves. Distinct and intricately stitched chenille patches are placed throughout; drawing reference to the city of New York and the brand. The People’s Champ Plaid Logo Hoodie follows the collegiate theme with its bold lettering and distinct pattern. For a more sophisticated touch, the Spring collection also includes the Mohair Ombre Stripe Cardigan and Camp Collar Checkerboard Logo Shirt. Focusing on quality and fit, high-end textiles are utilized within each design for a perfect blend between casual and luxe.
